Alright alright alright,

I just found out that my 1982 BJ42 has a hole in the top of the gastank up by one of the straps.

What'r my options here? Can I patch? With what? Do I need a new tank?

If I need a new tank, is it the same model as the normal gas fj40? And is there anybody who knows where to get a post '78 tank sourced in Canada?

Thanks in advance for the info,
I appreciate the wealth of knowledge you guys have to share.

Cheers,
K.

Yes you can patch it.
I've done this several times with several tanks.
I made a patch out of a sheet of metal large enough to cover the hole and some extra.
Cleaned the metal (tank and patch) thouroughly and soldered it.

No big issue on a dieseltank, but it's an different story on a petrol tank.

Best way to avoid any danger: Make absolutely shure the tank has no more fuel in and is well ventilated before starting the job!!!!
If not it can explode !!!!

If the top is pretty rust I may consider doing the POR-15 rebuild of the tank till I bought a new larger one.

You basically follow the directions from por. And you use fiberglass cloth soaked in Por 15 and build it up, just like fiberglassing.

Then do the tank restore on the inside like they show on how to renew a rusty tank.

I bet it would last years.

When you buy the paint you will get a cataloge that shows using the fiberglass repairs. Looks very slick.

exmodlad might have a used tank availalble for ya, he is currently parting out a bunch of diesel trucks including a BJ42, check in the "parting out" section.

He's even on your side of the country though I don't know how close he is to you.

Cheers,

Adam

I have a plastic (ABS?) auxiliary tank (from a ford bronco) in my '79 BJ40 - The exuast pipe worked loose and melted a hole in it - I managed to patch it with JB Weld and it has held up for years - whereabout in the Kootenays are you located?
