I have been considering tack welding the nuts to my u-bolts to have them stay put.

Would this be a problem?

When I remove my u-bolts, I always end up cutting them off anyhow, and I carry a set of 4 u-bolts as trail spares.

Thanks!

I don't see why not. I would run them for awhile first before welding them though, they always need some retorqueing before they are really set permanantly.

Do you carry a cutting wheel on the trail incase you needed to get them off?

When I put on new u-bolts, i torque them to 90 ft/lbs, then go drive around the block a few times, then retorque them.
I drive on it for a week, then check the torque.
When I do the check a week later, I trim the bolts at that time.
I figure that I could tack them when I do that..

I carry a hacksaw and blades on the trail for that and various other reasons.
:D

if they are just tacked you could probably break the weld by wrenching it, do it.
