Does anyone know if the variable reluctance flywheel tach sensor was installed in every H41/42/55 transmission even if the vehicle wasn't equipped with a tachometer?

I ask because the stock dash mounted tachometers seem fairly rare in the diesel 40 and 60 series trucks but every H41/42/55 transmission I've seen personally over the years has had the stock sensor in the bell housing. The wires may have been cut off but the sensor was there.

bj 60's have them.

Whats in the gearbox is more to do with the engine. I have never seen any sensors in H55F from 3F or 1HZ because they get their signal from other sources such as the alternator and injection pump.

Thanks for all the responses. I thought it would be strange if all the trucks came with a sensor installed in the trans from the factory

I have a cast iron BJ42 bellhousing in one of my trucks that isn't drilled for the tach sensor. Wish I could tell you what year it was from. I suspect it was from an early BJ42.

If it's the one you bought from me few years ago ... it's a 1982 ;)

My H55F from a 70 series has the sensor on the bellhousing
