I assume you mean an after market tach of some sort.

I have read quite a few people put "Tiny Tachs" on and they seem to really like them....
Tiny Tach

For my conversion, 3B in an FJ60 body, I got a complete BJ60 dash cluster. The tach sensor for the 3B is different from the regualar gas engine. I was told either remove and install the tach in the FJ cluster or just use the complete BJ cluster. I have seen posts where people get an aftermarket tach and install either in the cluster intself or under dash. Depends on how you want it to look. The tach sensor for the
3B in on the side of the bellhousing.

my bellhousing is cast iron. there is no wire coming out ot the bellhousing. i have an aluminum bellhousing that does have the tach wires but do not want to take the drivetrain out again. is there anywhere else i could make a tach work?

yeah ive read you can get tachs that hook up to your fuel lines or your alternator but i beleve with both you have to calibrate them hope this helps

rather than start a new thread- I should probably ask here-

My BJ42 (3B) had its tacho removed at some point-
the PO recently got one from a wreckers and put it in, but didn't get it working yet. he has plugged it straight into the waiting socket behind the dash. The light comes on inside it, but it doesn't actually work.

Question- where does it actually pick up from- what sort of connections should I be looking out for that are missing?
I will try to get some photos up tomorrow of some of the suspect wiring.
Cheers.

For the money and the hassle of using an Autometer 12 volt tach, you might as well go with the Tiny Tach. If you need to pull 12 volts off the 24 volt system you might as well pull less current and not have to calibrate the tach.
The tiny tach is a bit pricey but very easy to install and no calibbration! also it does other things like track hours, if you care?

Cheers

Beejay42 you have to make sure you have the correct bellhousing and tach sensor that goes into it...this is were the signal is picked up and sent on its way to your dash

here is the bellhousing, note the hole on the pass side of the housing, directly across from the clutch fork, that will accept the tach sensor.

and here is the tach sensor that goes into the hole in the bellhousing

and you also have to have the correct flywheel to send the message to the sensor

Thanks Gord-
together with the advice i have gotten on this thread I started,
your pictures and description have made it very clear.

As i have just got home and had time to check- unfortunately I can see that I have no tach sensor/sender...
just a hole in the bellhousing like in your picture.
I guess I will have try to source one.

Thanks,
Hans.
