I have been looking for a tach too (1979 BJ40), but never found any info about a factory tach. And there are no built in factory sensors for driving a tach. Best way to install a tach is to derive an AC voltage from the alternator. But you need a tach that can be adjusted, so you have to calibrate it.

Cool, can you describe where it was located and what it looked like? Customer really wants one!

come in apart gauge ( not factory cluster included ) at left side ( LHD models ) like a 60 factory tach with gre cover plate ( as factory dash cluster ).

Let me search it on the forums and see if I can get a pic ..

Sounds like the HJ45 tach gauge;) I think they use a sensor on the flywheel

I seen one a few weeks ago on ebay AUS. Your best bet is go to ebay australia for thats where you will find most of them. I have a AUS BJ42 in which I have to buy some things from over there. Here is a list of ebay stores over there that if you email them you can ask if they can find for you! These came on like 81 or 82 and up FJ40, FJ45 and BJ42's and maybe more but thats all I know of?

roodogs 4wd spares
private parts 4wd

Good luck

This tach was only available, as far as I have been able to determine, for RHD vehicles. why this was the case, I have no idea. I have one and am currently trying to figure out how to best install it into my truck, which I am converting to LHD. One issue is that the tach takes up the space where the side window defroster port is located. On Australian 40's, they didn't have any accomodation for the hoses and side defrosters.

If I look at cutting the dash to the right of the instrument cluster as a possible fitment location, on the other hand, the front defroster metal plenum is in the way. Perhaps it could be chopped and moved 0.5" or so to the right, but I'm a bit loathe to do this.

I'd be interested to see a picture of the SOR HJ47 LHD (from Nicaragua) to see how the dash is arranged, though I suspect there will be no factory tach.

Funny you should mention the defrosters. I was on Pirate4x4 the other day and saw them for the 1st time on a Greenland cruiser. Ive never seen them on any 40/45 series here.
Ill bet the Japanese cruiser's had the tacho too
