I am going to be putting in some new gauges and want to add a tach. I have never done this on a diesel, and was wondering where it would connect to since there is no distributor or spark plug wires. Is there a special tach made for diesel engines?

the standard tacho needs a magnet in the flywheel to run it and the standard flywheels dont have these magnets

AutoMeter #2308 - runs off of a sensor you clamp on the alternator.

and is standard for all alternators .?

Justo to know where the 1HD-T tach get the signal .. ?

1H# engines get their tach signal from the injection pump

I thought I read somewhere that 2H flywheels already had the magnet? I could be wrong, but I swear I read that.

correct, 2H flywheels have the magnet, and 2H bellhousings the threaded hole for the tach pickup.

The arrow points to the sensor in the 2H bell housing. The housing on the right is from a 1Hz.

Thanks! Do you know what size the threaded hole is? I think standard is like 3/4-16 thread.

I don't know exactly, but it is metric and big (ok, I am not a big help there, sorry). The 3B sensor fits the 2H hole.

Hey Guys. I'm new to this forum and it is ace!
While you're on the subject of tacho's for the big 2h, I've got a question.
I have 2 HJ60's 1 is 1982 and one is 1984. I was driving the '84 with a 5 speed until i bought the '82 4 speed cos the 84 has a rooted roof. I swapped boxes and bellhousings over but not the fly wheel. My 82 didn't come with a tacho and as far as i know has no wiring for one. Correct? I want to put the tacho out of the 84 in it but don't know if it's posible. Hopefully Jan-78fj40 is right in saying they all ready have the trigger magnet on the flywheel, that solves one problem because the bellhousing has the sender. How do i wire the bloody thing? The back of the tach has JAP writing and i cant undersand it. Can anyone help.
I'm just a stupid Aussie!

So I see lots of different tachs that have a "Connection to the magneto" option on egauges. I also think I saw some that said alternator. Would either of these work or am I missing the point?

There are only 3 different models that actually say "Diesel" in their description, but I son't really like tham.
