Hi Experts. Say you have some randon diesel engine, dosent matter what kind it is. Its just not a toyota. Anyways how do you hook up the tach in a conversion. This is on a fj62 with a 3fe. Thanks for the help.

I bought one. 120.00. I'm going to put it in my 1HZ powered HJ60.

is there a way to hook up my stock tach to any of these units?

I would like to keep things as simple as possible, and avoid cluttering things up with more gauges?

Im a bit the same way with gauges and I dont like drilling holes in the dash
I think the easiest way for you would be to source a HJ60 tach and run a sensor off the flywheel like the 2H diesel does. Im not exactly sure how you would connect it.
Otherwise there are pulse tachos that detect a pulse from the fuel injection line and covert it to rpm.

I would be willing to substitute the stock gauge for an aftermarket one. But I would not un der any circumstance leave my dead tach in the dash and then mount a 2nd working one. Just a half ass way to do things.

I could like with that. Looks like it has been there since it rolled off the assembly line.
What is better out of the two different kinds of diesel tachs. Ones that draw their signal off the flywheel or off the alt.?

VT's and my 1HZ draw information from the alternator....

that seems like it would be the easy way to do it. I would like to try an isuzu diesel swap, in conjunction with a frame off restoration. That was much of the placement/fab can be done with a miniminal amt. of stuff in the way. Has anyone done a isuzu swap yeat?

VT,

That tach. looks great:beer: . I will have to make a note of this for when I get this far.

I know your truck was a HJ. Will this tach fit in a FJ60 dash the same way? My 1HZ is a 12volt. Will that make a differance?

12v tach

I used VTs thread to find my tach, the same one discussed here...it's a 12volt tach, it uses a small induction pickup from the alternator, and a 12v power wire and ground. I run mine off my 12/24v converter in the truck for the cd player, works great, installed in under an hour. I put a backing plate in my steering column and hung it there, works perfect.

VT, how is it getting to the back of the cluster and removing the stock tach?

I herd on the fourms some where that you can just pull the cover off the steering wheel. Is this really the case? There was talk to fixing a squeeky steering wheel. Basically just lube it and reassemble, but I dont want to go yanking on anything yeat, until I know for shure.
