Just like the title of the post says.
Can someone please comment on the photo and point me in the right direction, I have a leak coming from the transfer case. Where should I start on a solution. I read some posts about leaking output shafts seals, is this the case here?

Oh ya 1988 BJ74.

Thanks in advance,

Drew

can't tell for sure by the pic..... could be coming from the front out-put shaft and blowing back, but looks kinda like it's leaking where the 2 case halves meet.... I would give it a good washing and inspect it again after some use.......

x2 and give the drain plug a tighten up before you start the heavy duty stuff.
The drain plug is supposed to have a washer ,if its been reused too many times or missing it will leak regardless of how tight it is.

If you have to put a gasket and seal kit through it,consider doing the bearings as well as the labour will be similar.

I agree with Rosco, go for the simple stuff first, often the problem is something simple. If you spend a bit of time in the mud with truck idling away in low-low waiting for a recovery, mud can get forced into the seals and the result is what you see above. Pinion seals if I recall correctly. Having said that, your bash plate does not look as though it has seen a lot of action, which is a good thing in my book.

Good luck

Thanks guys, I will wash it up today and tighten up the drain plug and see what happens.

Hosed it all off and tried the drain plug, it is tight. After a few days the leak was back and coming from the front output shaft. So I beleive the seal is probably shot so I'll replace it.
Now for my silly question. Where do I check the oil level in the transfer case? I checked the fsm and it doesn't show anything.

Thanks guys.

Drew

You can see the fill plug in the picture. Just above the lowest point of droop with the speedo cable and to the left a tad is the plug.

Check the fill level of the transmission too.
