A two owner FJ40 purchased new by the original owner in Culver City (LA) CA. The FJ was retained by the original owner until 2009, continuing to reside in Southern CA. It was used primarily for commuting to and extensively exploring the Baja and remote areas throughout Mexico, a country for which the owner had an affinity and great curiosity for.

The second owner, a 30 plus years professional mechanic and paint and body technician, purchased the FJ in 2009 from the original owner and had it shipped to his residence in IN. He performed a body off, nut and bolt restoration for his own personal use, completing it in 2010. Note that the FJ was totally rust-free and the entire chassis and all body panels and seams were extensively covered over bare metal with premium antirust sealer during restoration.

While retaining the classic and iconic original body style, subtle body modifications were made to update and improve functionality. This included fitting a 1974 hardtop and metal doors (the FJ originally was a soft top only model) and fitting FJ25 rear quarter panels to accommodate larger tires. The door hinges were modified to simply lift off similar to soft top doors. Rear hatch door is equipped with gas struts. A rear heater was added to the cab.

The original engine had previously been replaced by the first owner in the early 1980’s to get increased power and performance and to convert to diesel since diesel fuel was more widely available than gas in rural Mexico, plus improved fuel mileage (22 mpg). The owner had learned of conversion kits being available and frequently used in Japan to convert the FJ’s to six cylinder, 4.0 liter Mitsubishi industrial diesel motors (Model #6DR5, also used out the time by Chrysler in the US in D100 Dodge trucks) and a then late model Toyota 5 speed transmission. He ordered the kit, including motor and transmission and had it shipped to CA where he had it professionally installed with the addition of a Ray Jay Turbo Charger. A complete shop manual for this engine comes with the vehicle.

This FJ was restored to be used and driven. The modifications were made with improved functionality and versatility in mind. It can be comfortably driven at highway speeds or handle the toughest off roading or rock climbing you can throw at it. The engineering and workmanship is of the highest quality. It reflects the pride in workmanship of a dedicated and experienced professional. Although the restoration was completed approximately 10 yrs ago the vehicle has continuously been garaged in a climate control, has been very well taken care of and never subjected to harsh conditions or use. It has been driven approximately 10K or fewer total miles. Consequently, the restoration, both cosmetically as well as mechanically, appears to be much fresher with minimal wear and tear apparent.
