In another post, Beowulf mentioned I should put in synthetic in my tranny. Since I will be changing ALL the fluids (oil, tranny, diffs), my question is should I replace all with synthetics?

I understand that it holds up better and that it is "more slippery", and that the pressure gauge may read a little differently, especially in the beginning. But what about changing the engine oil to synthetic in a 92k mile LC? Is there a bad side to this? I have heard of doing this after the break in period, but not 91k miles later!!! ::) If I do change, is there anything special I need to do?

As for the tranny and diffs, what would you recommend? I have used Redline before (in my 1972 Datsun 240Z that I rebuilt), but I have heard much about Amsoil and Mobil 1.

Seem like great people with great experience on this forum, so I am hoping you can help steer me in the right direction.

Thanks!!

On the engine oil stuff; Try using search with
keywords "oil mobil 1"
username "cary"
days "180"

Cary and others have posted up a lot of good information on oil. From what I've picked up on, it goes something like this.. Chervon Supreme, Chevron Delo, Rotella-T, Mobil 1 as far as the best oil for a given group. It just depends on how much you're willing to spend on oil. Personally, I was a little concerned about going synthetic on the motor oil because of a slow oil leak. I've been using the Delo 15w-40, and my oil seepage appears to have gone away (knock on wood).

You want to get a good gear oil for the differentials. In my somewhat amatuer experience, I think this in particular has a somewhat marked impact on fuel mileage.

The Amsoil and Redline appear to get high marks, but you're obviously aware of the $$'s for these.

I use to run Castrol Syntec 5 - 40 in my other two toys, one was a 91 Toy V6 pickup & the other was an 89 Toy 4-runner V6. Both had high miles, the stuff worked great in them. Has anyone used it in their LC? The reason I ask, I can get it relatively cheep at the local K-Mart up the street for 3.50 a quart.

[/quote]From what I understand Castrol syntec (unless the bottle says "Made in Germany") is not relly synthetic as known by everybody but Castrol, so you are paying extra for good conventional oil. I don't really know more than that, sorry.

I saw Mobile 1 at Costco yesterday in a 6 pack for 23.33 (3.88 each).

Great now stresspuppy & I are total confused on what use on our new trucks. Thanks for the heads up on the Mobil 1 at Costco, that sounds like a great deal for REAL 100% synthetic. Still can't believe the Castrol syntec 5 - 40 was not really 100% synthetic. Maybe since it is not real synthetic it might be a good motor oil to use. I know when I got my V6 4-runner it had 210,000 on it. Started using the Castrol and did not have any oil leaks. Something to ponder over? ???

Don't worry too much about the oil. Not all LC's will leak like mine. I know that my PO used the truck only in Bangkok with its horrible rush hours of stop and go every day. So hours of hours within seven years stop and go that wears the strongest engine down. No record of maintenance from the PO. So you know what that means !!

I have to live with some small repairs here and there but the rest of the truck looks as if it comes right out of the factory.

92k is not hi mi.
I started using syn at 220k.
I started with M1 but it the motor would use oil at high rpms. I also got a oil pan leak.

I then went to Rotella T syn and the leak and high rpm oil use went away.
Start with M1. If it doesn't work out try Rotella T Syn.
As with dino oils, if one doesn't work (uses oil) try another.

Does it mater what tranny syn oil you use? I don't know.

I use dino or a synth blend in my truck at 164K.

Full synthetic tends to leak.

I think for this oil change I will stick with dino stuff (Castrol 10w-30) since that is what I am used to and know most about.

I have had good experiences with Red Line Synth stuff, so I think I will definitely put that in the diffs. Haven't tried their tranny stuff, but if it is like their gear oil.......

Anybody had experiences with Red Line??

From what I have been reading sounds like the Mobil 1 is the way to go. If I have any issues I will let everyone know. So now that just leaves the diffs, transfer and the tranny. Looks like amsoil or redline for the diffs, any impute on the transfer and tranny?

Thanks RavenTai that clears it up. Well I have officially been a*sfisted by another corp. co. Yea! I love it Castrol could not just say it had additional additives? No they had to let the marketing guys pump it up. I never would have known. Makes me wonder if they really are super sizing my fries and not just putting them in cardboard?

Also, a place more people might have access to, Walmart has the 5-quart jugs of Mobil1 for about $18 per jug (Our local one was $22/jug, then went down to $18ish), so about $3.60/quart. Some Walmarts seemed to have them while others didn't, but I think all Walmarts are sposeto carry the jugs now (in 5w30/10w30/20w50 all full syn).

I've been using Mobil 1 in my '97 since I got it with 49K miles, now at 124K, no leaks, runs like a champ! :D

I had RedLine gearlube in my t/c but ended up draining it when I was doing some work, didn't have any good way to save it...argh...at $8.50/quart, not cheap stuff. I bought a bunch of M1 ATF to flush my tranny with, haven't done it yet, but have a ton of the ATF, it's about $4/quart at AutoZone.

I'll probably just throw in M1 gearlube in the diffs and t/c, easier to get and cheaper than RedLine.

Good Luck..

That WalMart in Lafayette has the 5 quart jugs for about $20, but only 5w30 and 10w40, I picked up 4 5w30's last weekend. That's what goes into the Taco & Passat, was going to do the 80 too but then I found the 0w40 M1 over at AutoZone, and again at Checker for about the same price. I didn't get any since I had just dropped $80 on oil but it's a new week now and a new pay period, so I'll probably get 0w40 tomorrow for the 80, since that's the most recommended by the group.

Checker had some $3.99/quart sign up in front of the M1, see associate for details. I was in a hurry so I didn't ask about it, was just there to dump off my used oil from the truck. But it said the offer ran through July I think so it's probably worth checking out, it said you needed a coupon. I'm going to check out Costco tomorrow, see if they have the 0w40, if not will go back to Checker.

The point to my ramblings is that I'm about to switch from Dyno to M1 in the 80, which currently doesn't drip, but does "sweat" a little oil, just not enough to make it to the garage floor, but enough to get your hand oily if you touch my oil pan. So I'm happy to be another data point for you guys who are wondering if your truck will leak more with M1. 1996, 124K, planning on changing it Sunday morning..

remember that Kragen (and so probably Checker) has a not so much advertised price matching policy. They will match Walmart etc price and then take off another few % on top... :D :D :D :D

FWIW, I switched from dino to synth at 118K in the cruiser. ( In my 88 4Runner (V6), I've run synth-blend since 175K and I'm now over 220K with no leaks from the motor other than valve cover gaskets. ) In the cruiser, I'm now at 125K with no leaks other than the tiny original oil leak with the oil pan arch...not enough to ever even drop to the floor, just enough to have a residue on the bellhousing bottom. As I get more and more miles on with the synth, I think the rings are floating more freely - the motor just gets smoother and smoother it seems. But most importantly, no leaks. On my last oil change I collected the oil for the blackstone labs analysis, have not sent it in yet but for grins and giggles I'll post results later.

Ok, let me be stupid about this:

If you change your oil every 5k miles or less, what do you REALLY gain by going to synthetic?????

:slap: No flames, please..........
