I am looking to have a swing-out tire carrier made for my '78 FJ40; can someone recommend a good fabricator.
I need something with tail-lights, reverse lights, D-rings, Can holders and MOST IMPORTANT: COOLER CARRIER.
Please don't recommend Man-a-Free.
Thanks-
BH

Thanks. The link wasn't showing, that's why I asked.

Has not worked all day for me....that is why I said that it might be down.

Luke is great to work with, and is an all-around great guy.

Swaaang out tire carrier.

Thanks Steve. I'll lob a call over there and say that you all said nice things.
I had a company called Keenesaw Mtn. making a carrier for me but they said it would be ready in approximately 9-10 weeks. 10 weeks? Whaaa? I am going to move on. Not sure today what will happen to deposit but I'm sure it' will work out fine. they told ame about the lead-time after I paid. I won't do that again.
There is also a guy on Ebay selling swing out carriers. I found out about him from a 4x4 buddy of mine who bought one for his j**p that looks pretty stout. The Ebay guy thinks that he can make one for an FJ40 with minimal modifications for tail lights, bolts, etc. I'll probably talk to him too, see if he's for real.
It's gotta have a cooler carrier; period.

tire carrier

This isn't a good pic.. but JK Customs makes a nice one, or will make to order.. contact--- http://jkcustoms.com/

Just curious, why not a MAF? I think they are the best on the market. I am making my own right now and can honestly see why the well built ones cost so much now.

Just a thought, but if you are on the east coast I would count on at least a few hundred extra to ship something that big...

Just my .02

Good Luck!

No specific reason about the MAF. Because I already know about them, I am hoping to find somebody closer or possibly a well kept secret for cruiserheads.
Thanks for the advice Rez.

For something that is being custom fabricated, and is not a cookie-cutter item, ten weeks is not an unusually long lead-time.

If you choose the Ebay guy, MAKE SURE he has a Land Cruiser of a very close or exact year as your truck, so that mounting and anything else you are looking to have done, will be done correctly, and will work with your truck.

I honestly do not know what Luke’s lead-time is, but it would not surprise me in the least to hear that it is eight weeks.

I am VERY GLAD to see you write this.....

You certainly are learning a lot about fabrication and the time involved with making a quality product. This is priceless education. It is very difficult for a lot of people to understand what it takes to fabricate something, and make it strong enough to last, as long at the vehicle it is attached to, if not longer. Many people go on and on about how easy something is to fabricate, only to not only miss the mark of what they were trying to make, but miss it really bad, and have wasted a pile of time and money on something that does not function as they had hoped, and looks like poop. I look forward to seeing your end product!

Good luck!

Since you are on the east coast you could always try Lance Williams at www.Ironpigoffroad.com He is in VA, I know he does a nice job with 60 and 80 bumpers and is willing to make just about anything you can think of.

Ryan.

Got mine from JT Oufitters, both the rear bumper and tire carrier. I had to relocate the license plate holder on my '73 fj40, pleased with the construction and finish.

Steve,

I am having a blast and almost certainly mooching too much of IanB making this thing. I used to look at the prices of well made stuff, MAF, Slee, others and think, "how hard can it be?" Buy some steel cut and weld!

By the time you add in materials, all the little odds and ends, design time, and costs of each the MAF bumper is a screaming deal. It is made right, built for the 40 (no modded jeep part) and has a lifetime warranty to boot!

All that said, I am having a lot of fun building mine, I just really have gained a new appreciation for the things that are made well for the cruiser.

I too am anxious to see what the final product ends up like, in form and function.

Thanks-

x2

Lance has a new one in the works for the DIY builder. He also has a pretty sweet swing out for the 40 for a killer deal. There is plenty of room for a cooler rack for sure...

No affiliation, just a satisfied customer, and they are east coast!

Grant,

Love to talk to you about your FJ! Looks REALLY nice. What year is it? I have a 71 that I'm renovating that is red also. Mind if I ask some questions?
