Hey folks. Not sure if you saw my post in the 60 series forum, but to pass the inspection to legally get my truck on the road, I need both backing plates for the rear brakes. Cruiserdrew graciously offered to give me a decent used one for the price of shipping (not sure which side it's for).
If I can't get another one (short of going to the dealer and paying $150 CDN for a new one), there's one other option. Maybe this is a crazy idea, but a friend of mine has a 1986 HJ60 that's not currently on the road. If the backing plates are OK (and if they are the same), would it be a good idea to swap the whole rear axle? Apparently it's less work than changing the backing plates. I know the gear ratios are different - not sure if it's for the better or the worse.
The next best option is to get the used backing plate from Cruiserdrew and buy the other one new. My friend could change them, but he's not looking forward to it (will probably take a day or two to do that).
PS: for anyone interested, to pass the inspection so I can legally put it on the road, turns out I need wheel cylinders, parking brake cable (might be able to save the original), front flex hoses rear brake shoes, rear brake drums and a hand brake cable. All of the parts are available locally for a decent price, except the drums which are ridiculously expensive (about $100 each). If anyone has a decent set of used ones for a reasonable price, or even free,
and you live within a couple hours of Barrie or Toronto, let me know.
