Hey folks. Not sure if you saw my post in the 60 series forum, but to pass the inspection to legally get my truck on the road, I need both backing plates for the rear brakes. Cruiserdrew graciously offered to give me a decent used one for the price of shipping (not sure which side it's for).

If I can't get another one (short of going to the dealer and paying $150 CDN for a new one), there's one other option. Maybe this is a crazy idea, but a friend of mine has a 1986 HJ60 that's not currently on the road. If the backing plates are OK (and if they are the same), would it be a good idea to swap the whole rear axle? Apparently it's less work than changing the backing plates. I know the gear ratios are different - not sure if it's for the better or the worse.

The next best option is to get the used backing plate from Cruiserdrew and buy the other one new. My friend could change them, but he's not looking forward to it (will probably take a day or two to do that).

PS: for anyone interested, to pass the inspection so I can legally put it on the road, turns out I need wheel cylinders, parking brake cable (might be able to save the original), front flex hoses rear brake shoes, rear brake drums and a hand brake cable. All of the parts are available locally for a decent price, except the drums which are ridiculously expensive (about $100 each). If anyone has a decent set of used ones for a reasonable price, or even free, :D and you live within a couple hours of Barrie or Toronto, let me know.

There are quite a few guys out here on the west coast that have parts for your truck. Steve @ Extreme bends is one of them. He has a web site- you might want to try him. Cruiserparts.net is another used supplier. They're in the States but I think at your end of the continent. You can also give the local cruiser club a look. Join up with those guys and you'll have some good parts sources. I think they are the Upper Canada Cruiser Club and used to meet in Guelph at Dimitri's on Sundays.

As for changing axels- backing plate change seems easier to me and you want to have the same ratios front and rear or your 4WD is useless to you- you'll not be able to run in 4 at all. That said if you swap BOTH axels your doing yourself a favour by upgrading to 4:11 gears.

as Peter said, DO NOT swap just one axle but an excellent idea to swap both in...

Yes, sounds like it would be a nice upgrade. Not sure if my buddy would be willing to do the swap though... he'd be downgrading himself. But, I'll run the idea by him! :D

Thanks for the suggestions. I phoned cruiserparts.net and they've got some, a bit cheaper than the dealer but with shipping and duty it would probably come to the same price as new ones from the dealer. Will try the other suggestions, though it sounds like I might be able to get some from other members, on the West coast though, so I'd have to wait for shipping. If I can get some before the weekend, we can get them on and not have to pay for another inspection.

Sadly... my friend won't go for swapping both axles. He said we could swap the rear axle just to pass the inspection, then switch them back. But, that's not honest, not to mention it's a lot of work. Might as well just change the backing plates. I'll keep the axle swaps in mind for a future mod. Maybe I'll find a rusted out HJ60 going cheaply sometime and swap the axles.

Here's my BJ60 as it sits tonight...
