My truck has a 22R (w/a manual transmission) that is getting very tired. I realize a new 22R or 22RE would be the easier way to 'repower' my 1987 PU . . . but just curious what others might have done as a motor option / replacement.

Get on Pirate4x4, look at the 2rz and 3rz swaps everyone seems to be doing. Easy fitment since it's still a 4cylinder, commerically available motor mount kits, etc.

VW diesel would be sweet too

Marlin crawler forum has a big section on the rz swaps.

If you are going to swap, I will also favor the 3RZ. Some day, I will do this ... as soon as I find an engine.

My main question is what is your skill level? you can put a ford 302 in or tons of engines but it all comes down to what you can and cannot do

Good info, Thax. Gonna do some research on these suggestions.

A few have swapped in a 7mgte (toyota supra turbo) engine. That looks like the most power for the buck, but if I understand correctly, requires a customer bellhousing to mate to an r151. I'd love to do this swap with my truck one day.

Also, many have done the 5vzfe 3.4 liter v6 swap. I hear that isn't too much more difficult than the 3rz swap.

What is your goal? Power or economy?

And can you weld motor mounts?
Can you mill adapters etc?

I'd do an om617 if I had the time / welding skills

My buddy swapped a 3.4 with good results

An L series diesel will drop right in with a hoist and some hand tools

I'd never do an electronic diesel, but this is an option for others: Repower - Brand New Consumer Crate Engines - Cummins Engines For a mechanical diesel I'd look at the 603's (OHC) instead of the 617's.

More realistic: I'd find a totaled Taco 4x4 with the 3.4L V6 and a manual trans. Adapt the existing transfer case to the trans. It will fit the engine bay better, and the cooling system won't be the huge compromise that longer or much higher output engines force.

The Chevy 4.3 fits very nicely. It is also has a ton of power.

Dyno

Wish the 3.4L swap could easily be made KA legal.

Is it not? A newer model year engine & from the same vehicle weight class (i.e. light pickup/suv) should be fine?
Unless you're trying to ditch the cats etc...

I was under the impression that as long as you maintain all the emissions that was found on that engine then life would be good. Of course, you still need to get it blessed by CARB, and I understand that is a royal PITA.

The problem is that with an OBD-II engine from the first sensor in the intake to the last sensor in the exhaust it all has to be OEM or a part/parts with an E.O. number(s) in order to pass the visual part of the Referee's evaluation. The 3.4's head pipe dumps on the pass side and it would need to dump on the driver's side to clear the front drive-shaft & transfer case. To my knowledge there is no driver side dump head pipe with an E. O. number. Some of my research suggests that the 3.4's head pipe is also a double walled tube with an air gap, so modifying one to dump on the driver side would not be easy.
Could use the OEM headpipe & route the exhaust down the pass side, but it would be painful because room for the cat would have to be found where it was in essentially the donor vehicle's stock position and still clear everything while also not setting the floor on fire.

It would be easier to buy property in rural NV.
