update 08-08-13

Since the re-route my temperatures are over 150F after the truck is warmed up. It's all working well.
The key is to have the FPHE closest to your switching valve. It should be the last step. Another thing I've learned is that coolant heat exchangers give you the biggest gains in temperature by far. Any electrical devices make only marginal gains.
In my case I barely have to wait until the truck is up to operating temp to switch to SVO from dino. When I switch over fuel jumps up to 85-90F and climbs quickly from there. There are no operational hitches--you can't tell it's switched to a different fuel. Seemless.
It's clear there's not much time required for purge either as when I don't purge quite long enough it's slightly harder to start. (that's when having manual glow plugs comes in handy). In this fashion of trial and error I've narrowed it down to 30 secs. or so for my purge line to push the SVO back with diesel. Keep in mind it doesn't move fuel through lines as fast as it burns it. It pushes fuel through that purge line as fast as the pump will pump it. The pumps move fuel at 5-7psi so it ends up being 1/2 a KM of driving or around 30secs driving. When I do this there are no hard starts. You can definitely tell when it's trying to cold start some left over sVO (not good).
It's fun burning free fuel.
Collecting waste oil is defintley a dirty job. I feel pretty grubby climbing through waste dumpsters. It's for all the right reason's though. I don't mind being a dirtball once a week.

Filtering has been pretty good as well. My barrell is insulated and has a 120W pad heater stuck to the bottom. It maintains a temp. of 129F and draws just over 1 amp (I think). I have yet to do a hot pan test but from what I've read it should be pretty dry. It goes like this:

1) The oil sits for a minimum of 2 weeks in a pail.

2) Get dumped through a 10micron bag filter into my barrel. It sits in there for a week or so as I don't consume much fuel overall and have a couple hundred litres in reserve.

3) When I need to fill up I turn on my water pump and it pulls svo from the barrel through a nipple through a 5 micron whole house filter and it's then pushed through a water filter ( I was later told it's not effective to try to filter out water from svo because of emulsification and micelles. Either way it's staying inline for now.)
4) svo then goes through a final 1 micron filter and into my tank..................voi la.

Surf's up

So the weather looks like there will be some surf on our coast here so I'm strapping on my board and making the 5+ hour trek to some surf spots east. This is primarily why I did an svo build-up as I love to surf but it's a good drive that was getting expensive---300/trip. Now it'll be more like 30 bucks.
The biggest test for my rig so far has been an hour at a time a couple times and around town for a month or so. It will be run considerably longer this time but I don't expect and trouble. I'll load up 120L of fuel or so and bolt.
I will definitely be taking some tools though just in case!
Rock on

Where are you sourcing your SVO, Costco/Sam's club etc., and in what quantities? How are you getting the SVO into your rig? 12v electric hand pump or something else? Thanks.

WVO

I'm using waste oil from a couple resturants in town. I take it you think I'm purchasing new canola or the like but I'm not. New oil is around 1.80/L which is more than diesel. WVO is the way to go but it's dirty and it takes some time. I don't work on Fridays so if there's no surf it's my day to tinker with WVO.
I use jerry cans and a crank syphon from Harbor Frieght. It works great and pumps fast.

Iron Maiden Voyage!

So I headed for the coast on my first long trip with my rig and I was only 10mins out of town when my truck started working like s***. I thought I had air or a vacuum leak so I started the troubleshooting by bleed ign the air etc. It was working like s*** only when burning veggie and under load. When I burn straight diesel it was fine in all respects. I thought there might be a leak on the veggie side but it turns out the 2nd pump I installed to 'help' had caved and was not letting fuel through. It was a major restriction. I by passed it and went witht the stocker lift pump. It was fine and I drove all the way there on SVO. The only trouble I had was running out of fuel b/c the send unit and my gauge do not match well voltage wise and are very inaccurate. So note to self..........keep'er full.
I took 128 L with my in cans and filled up my 80L tank before I went. All went well. The truck was burning SVO at 160-175F which is nice and hot.
I paid more in tolls-- 4 bucks-- than I did on fossil fuels. It felt great and even though I had fuel with me I had lots of room.
I'm gonna fit my truck with a coolant heated filter so I can keep things wicked hot and run A / V blends.

Next year a turbo for my 3B and a proper cargo style bumper will make things more convienient.

This weekend is a 4 day weeeknd for me and the surf is up so I'll be hitting the road again.
karma exists
