This year's event looks to be the biggest and best ever.

As usual, I need to get YOUR ORDERS before I can print the shirts. The
cutoff date is October 15. Please order early if you can.

This year, the Pismo Beach Clam Festival is happening the same weekend
as Surf N Turf. A parade on Saturday morning kicks off this annual
event followed by a carnival, clam dig, live music and the famous Clam
Chowder Cook-off. There will be lots of activity at the pier and in
downtown Pismo. It shouldn't affect us on the beach and sand dunes,
but if you plan to stay in a motel get your reservations NOW!

I don't expect reservations will be necessary for camping on the
beach and beach camping really is the best!

I'll be camping on the beach, it's a blast and at $6/night it's a bargain.

There is no charge or formal registration for this event.
Simply come out and enjoy yourself with other Land Cruiser friends.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you all.

Our scout troop has a bike camping trip planned the same weekend. Bummer.

Pics from last year looked like you had a blast. I was also going to check things out in your area for a summer beach campout for the troop.

How about bringing a trailer to the beach?
How is the sand and how far to go?

I'm thinking either
- a pop-up tent trailer with tiny wheels (5.3 - 12)? highly unlikely to make it I would say?
or
- a utility trailer with 215/65/R15 or so? possible?
any thought?

Trailers are a VERY common sight on the beach.
Either trailer will be fine.

You might avoid going in or out during the high tide so you'll be driving on hard packed sand.

Good News:
According to my tide table the tides will be mellow (no 6+ ft highs or minus lows). Kind of boring.

but even the minuscule tires and 2500 lbs going from the road to the wet sand?

I'm amazed these trailers are going out there. Must be after a marketing campaign organized by the tow guys.
I'd be amazed if I can make make it with 5x12 tires on the popup. These tires are so skinny, they are pathetic and give me stomach aches everytime I see them.
How much loose sand is there to cross from real dirt to the hardpack?

It's ususally graded from the ramp to the hard pack.

If not, generous use of throttle seems to work pretty well.

Don't worry, if you get stuck we'll all come down and yank you out.

We can't have a stuck cruiser blocking traffic, bad for our image you know.

We've stayed there in our tent-trailer before, they have hook-ups, and lawns next to your pad. There's also hot showers!! It's right up the street from the entrance to the beach. the only downside is the train that goes right by, (at all hours!!) I swore that thing was going right through our trailer!!

Mostly an adult crowd or families as well? My son expressed more interest in this trip and exploring the dunes than the boy scout bike trip. He's 14 going on 28. Those with or having had teenagers will understand. hehehe

There are more families, kids, wives and girlfriends at Surf N Turf than most other events. I've already sold a good number of kid's size T-shirts.

It's great for the "captive audience passengers" because the wheeling is "freestyle". You choose how much or how little you do. It's not like being stuck in traffic on a long trail or being forced through obstacles you don't want to do. We see many rigs (and people) that don't go to other events.

Of course, there will be plenty of hardcore rigs and "adults that think they are kids" playing in the biggest sand box you could imagine. Just watching the action at the hill climbs and jumps is a great way to pass the time. Warning: Hill climbs, bowl carving and jumps are infectious and even the most conservative drivers are often sucked into the action.

Between the beach, dunes, people and cruisers, there will be plenty of distractions.
