At 70MPH, the ARB classic roof rack creates quit a bit of wind noise. No whisking or howling just lower pitch turbulence noise. Most of the noise comes from the sunroof. When I open the shade, noise increases. Thinking about 4 options:
1. Ordering the ARB plastic air dam
2. Are there other air damn options that would fit on the rack. ARB’s is somewhat ugly
3. Laying a sheet of Dynamat on top of the sun shade
4. Installing telephone wire in the leading edge of the glass to tighten up the gasket it.

Any thoughts on the above, especially the Dynamat. Don’t say, just turn up the stereo, lol.

Bumping this up. Hasn’t anyone else addressed wind noise on an ARB or similar roof rack? I know some have addressed wrapping leading cross bars but I am particularly interested in the ARB air dam or other air dams that would work.

Thanks

That's not how dynamat works. Try some Noico insulating foam on top of the sunshade. But I wouldn't expect that to make much difference.

Dynamat (or whatever brand) works by adding weight to panels to dampen the vibrations. So, dynamat should go over your headliner, stuck to the metal roof itself. Then some insulating foam on top of that.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m just looking for guidance on air dams or what I can put between the sunshade and glass to calm down the roof rack air turbulence sound.

Noico foam may help... but sound is a tricky thing, it's not linear like you'd think. The roof itself is amplifying the noise, so dynamat on the roof will do more.

You could try adjusting the roof dam with different gaps underneath or try wrapping a spiralling bit of cord along the damn to trip the flow... none of which i suspect will make as much difference as dynamat on the roof.

Heres a youtube link regarding quieting down the sunroof using phone cord Is there any downside to this approach such as lwater leakes?
