I'm having a problem with my HJ60 getting air into the fuel intake.

Runs fine then looses power, stutters and stalls and will not start.

Open the bleeder valve on the fuel filter, give it a few pumps to get the air out, it will start and run fine (for a while - a couple of days).

When I stopped for fuel and removed the gas (diesel) cap, you can hear the vacuum. No leaks. This would indicate that the fuel tank is tight.

So where is the air in the fuel line (fuel filter?) coming from?

Thanks

Is there any seepage around the primer pump? That would be my 1st stop.

I would also check the seal around the fuel filter or tighten it and go through all the hose fittings.
Its going to be a hard one to find if it takes a few days to let air in.

I'm going through the same thing right now. Get some clear tubing and run it from the hard lines on the body to the primer pump and look for bubbles to ensure the leak is not before the primer pump. Then maybe pump the primer pump a few times to build up pressure and see if the pump itself leaks. Then do as Rosco stated above.
I am thinking my problem might be crap in the tank. After the truck stalls, I take the gas cap off (same vacuum sound) and blow the line out from the soft hose to the primer pump (toward the tank). Reconnect and it runs great for a while. Good Luck!

Also, When Rob, Sheldon and Greg were down for SnT they mentioned that many Canadian cruisers develop a leak at the top of the tank from rust and let air in. My truck is JDM and relatively rust free underneath- don't know where yours is from.

I'm also leaning towards the primer pump.

When I changed my fuel filter, the primer pump leaked when I used it.

Now, it doe not leak but the primer pump does not pump very well.

It is getting more difficult to pump each time.

Thanks

Roger that. The primer is the culprit of many woes. Make sure to replace it with a metal denso unit like this one.

They seem to last a lot longer than the plastic ones. Or, if you've already got a metal pump, you could try just replacing the copper bushing at the bottom of the pump to see if that does the trick.

My steps ..

1. If you have water separator .. check it.

2. Some Diesel in a 5 gal tank and place a hose from the 5 gal tank to your primer pump ( to see if the problem is in the tanks or water separator or lines ..

3. Check or change your fuel filter

4. pull out your primer pump and check it ( the puller piston ) from internal wear ..

I did not know that the primer pump was a separate unit.

For only $50, I will just replace it.

I like the idea of pulling fuel from a separate container instead of the tank on the vehicle. However, I can idle for a long time before the air in the lines becomes an issue. Highway driving, also, does not result in air or stalling.

But drive in stop and go traffic and it will start acting up fairly quickly.

I did check the water separator. The fuel filter was changed, as I thought it may have been the issue.

Don't know if you are still having this problem, but it sounds very similar to what just happened to my '86 hj60.

Since the priming pump was basically shot, we replaced that first since it was easy and cheap. Seemed to fix the problem...but no such luck.

Clear tube sleuthing indicated (as previously mentioned in this thread) that the suction tube coming out of the tank was rusted. Sure enough, when we pulled the fuel line off half of the metal tube came right out with it.

The part was pretty cheap, but getting the fuel tank off and back on can be a wee bit of a hassle (rust? what rust? *hack* *bend* *hammer*). But once it was back on everything has been running just peachy.

Hope it's just your primer or some loose seal somewhere. Good luck either way.
