Stupid me! Help please, metal chip dropped into cylinder, best option?

2h engine. I may have dropped a chip of metal into my cylinder whilst changing injectors. My lighting was not good, I thought a carbon shadow imprint of the fat washer was a stuck washer. I twisted a tap thread into it to remove and pulled. But it was just carbon so I accidentally damaged the higher lip of the injector port where the fat washer sits. More than likely the chip fell through the pre- cup into the cylinder.

I feel so stupid.
What are my best options to make sure I have removed the metal from the cylinder?

1. remove head!?
or
2. get cylinder a bit before btdc so the valves open and vacuum tube and air compressor hopefully to blow it out through exhaust? Then check with a borescope which fits through precup?

I think removing the head would be the best way to make sure.
Most stupid mistake I have done to a car, at least I haven't started it up.
 
Thanks Tony. I thought of a magnet too but I still would not know absolutely for sure that all metal is out. Getting the magnet to pass the through the pre combustion chamber would be difficult too. Much cheaper process though.
 
How big are we talking? Anything small will likely just pass right out the exhaust valve.. maybe pull the glow plug, make sure both valves are shut and apply a shop vac to the injector port - cant imagine it will work but its worth a go.
 
I had to helicoil a spark plug hole on a motorcycle once. I made a skinny, straw adapter for my shop vac and sucked out the cylinder after tapping to get all the shavings. Not an ideal repair, but I didn't want to remove the "head". worked great!
 
They would only be little chips, but I am imagining tiny chips getting caught between piston rings.. good suggestions Duncan. My latest plan of recovery is pulling the exhaust manifold and sucking the bjesus whilst blowing the bjesus through the injector port..

I have jigged up a vacuum with a thin tube, but getting past the precup and sucking all is not convincing.

I have turned a simple job into quite a big one doh, doh doh at least I haven't kicked her over, so it is only potential major damage as it stands. Have heard nightmare stories of bits falling in.

thanks man, yeah a 6mm hose would get past the precups, that is the other option. I don't feel like pulling the head. 8mm hose and drinking straw does not get past precup. Not many flex magnets get past the precup either, there is a 4mm flex magnet but need to look at it.
 
well, removed exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes and opened exhaust valve on the particular cylinder. blew it out from injector port, Stuff came out of exhaust port, hard to tell if I got it all out. The valves would have bigger openings than trying to get it through the pre cups or glow holes.

I think, it is the second best option besides pulling the head.

I shall pray to the automotive gods.

Please anyone chime in if they have a better way, as I put it together.


only guarantee is death and taxes. (could add my occassional stupidity) but toyota comes close.

we all make stupid mistakes. I would borrow a adjustable bore scope and see if it has a gripper to grip onto it. Other option, get a neo magnet take it to machine shop and have it machined on a lath. The inside diamter is 1,000 of a inchs smaller then the barel of the camera. The outside diamater is smaller then spark plug hole. Taper the top so it does not catch on inside lip of spark plug hole. heat up magnet and slide it over camera. When it contracts it will not slip off.

this one looks a possibilty, 3.9mm lens which should fit through injector port and then the pre combustion chamber exit. But I really prefer to look at the thing before I buy it. It seems close up focus to be an issue with many of these new toys, which is all I would use it for. Bit exy tho, for another unkown.

Just reporting back. Put the extractors and exhaust back on, quick scuff and lick of paint on the extractors as they get hammered by mud and gravel, and then wire wheel lid of air filter box then epoxy paint.

First start up I had bubbling witches brew on the injector port I damaged. I am reaching the age I need to get glasses obviously, smoking doesn't help. It was worse than I thought.

So I whittled down a spare aluminium return washer down to 15mm id and 21.54mm-ish od to fit over the injector nozzle. Sand paper on a dowel for the id and used a countersunk bolt and nut as a mandrel and lathed it down for the od with a drill. Ordered some 16mm id by 22mm od aluminium crush washers as spares. It was 1mm thick, so I thinned down the original brass washer down to 2mm-ish thick by super glue tacking it to a mandrel and thinned down the thickness of original 3mm against a file with a drill. The compressed aluminium washer seals it better for sure, not leaking.

I followed blinkerfluid's approach from his 1hdt damaged port. Can't believe how good mud is!

So, new glows, Rosco's good advice of pumping lines through glow holes, bled filter, pump and injector lines (3x) and went for a Test drive good 40 mins, baked the manifold paint, runs well, bit more placebo punch. Got rid of an exhaust rattle.

I shall report back if I trashed my cylinder. The sand in air inlet video made me feel a whole lot better. Bit of a shame I damaged a virgin head a bit, got to face up to glasses soon.
The old injectors were not replaced for at least 90000kms in my ownership, so I thought I was due, they were not too bad after all in the first place. Done now.
