hey guys, i'm just finishing up the front axle seal job and i was really excited to be done with it!! only to try to refill the diff with fluid but the G'dam fill bolt was tightened sooo F'in hard by the last person who worked on it, that the bolt stripped!!

i've tried big 10" vice grips and slipped still. the bolt is pretty rounded now and probalby won't be able to fit ANY bolt on there.

any idea on how else to take the damn thing off???

i'm going to try to spray some WD-40 and leave it over night and try the vice grips again tomorrow...

thanks for any help...

Chisel and a hammer works every time:beer:

Before you try vice grips.
Heat up bolt with propane torch. then let it cool, expanding and contraction may loose up things.

Those bolts can be a pain in the butt. Use a good 6 point socket and replace the fill plug with the 10mm allen plug. These can be used as a drain and fill plug. They also fit the transfer case fill plug. I got these at SOR.

I hope you did not remove the drain plug first....:frown:

Weld another bolt to the diff fill plug bolt and then turn the new bolt. Also, spray lots of PB or your favorite penetrant and soak for a nice long while.

You might be able to drill it out if you are careful.

Good luck.

Sears sells some nice sockets that are perfect for this, they are reverse cut and grab the bolt head so that when you're loosening the bolt, they're actually grabbing it tighter. I'm 99% sure those will get that bolt out for you, even if it's heavily rounded.

IIRC, those are factory plugs used on Camrys so you probably can get those from C-dan. Got them on my '85 and '86 trucks. Just another thing to add to my never ending list of parts.:bang::D

As mentioned above welding a bolt or nut will definitely do the trick. The previous owner of my '85 truck stripped the fill bolts on the diffs and tranny so I welded a nut on all of 'em and it worked like a charm. Now that I thing about it the crank pulley bolt was also stripped so I welded an old socket onto it to remove.:bang::mad::D

hey guys, thanks for your ideas...

i've sprayed wd-40 up the wazoo and have used a 10" vice grip.. still slipping and not working.

i went to sear's to see what they have... they had a bolt extractor but it only went up to 19mm. this fill bolt is 24mm!

so i guess my only other prayer is to weld a nut on there of somesort. maybe a lug nut and try to take it out that way...

???

this is a real big pain in the ass!!!

:) I disagree its probably not the best time to learn that. But if you have no other choice I suggest starting with lowest settings possible on welder so you don't weld bolt to diff housing and make it much worse.
take a pic of the bolt how bad it looks like.

I used the propane torch after vice grips and hammer and chisel didn't work. Heat it and put the vice grips or pipe wrench on it. Tap it with a hammer and chisel if the vice grips still slip.

hit the top of the plug with a hammer a few times then use stilsons, if that don't work heat it up and try again, if that dont work, weld a nut to the plug and while it's hot, try again, if that don't work, pay for my flight to L Vagas and I will do it for you, love Vegas been there many times, your lucky to live in such a nice part of the world, swap USA for the UK any day!!!!

You could try a small pipe wrench. That normally works better for me than vice grips. There should be enough of a head sticking out for you to grab.

Have you tried the pipe wrench as WarDamnEagle suggest. I have used it under desperation from bike seapost to freewheel, it never failed me. Hopefully you have enough room for grip in your case. Good luck.

Another vote for the pipe wrench. It will work and you don't have to weld anything, especially if you're new at it. Use a pipe wrench with sharp teeth and a long handle or cheater bar.

ahhhh here in the UK we call a pipe wrench a set of stilsons :)

I started to "translate" your post earlier. After 5 1/2 years I'm almost fluent in English English!

....still can't speak or understand a word of scouse!

Hey thats kewl WDE :) I must admit I find it hard to get technical, because what I want to say, does not come across right to guys in the USA :)
