MileHi
Just to let everyone know, I've failed denver emissions for my 81 FJ60 SEVEN times. Took the truck to get full tune up and valves adjusted before first emissions test spending over a thousand dollars and still failed SEVEN times. Finally after frustrating bouts with the emissions people...I took the truck to "No Pass No Pay" and a guy Named J.R. worked on my vehicle; it passed with flying colors..with almost zeros.

Original 7 failed tests ranged from

Idle ..
HC 700-388 ppm
CO 1.70%-0.90%

2500 RPM
HC 178-300
CO 0.50%-0.88%

After "No Pass No Pay"

Idle
HC 9.2 ppm
CO 0.00%

2500 RPM
HC 33.0
CO 0.10%

Anyone in Colorado having issues w/emission needs to go to this guy. Very honest and does quick work. Inexpensive too.

Now I can get Classic tags and never have to mess with emissions ever again. :flipoff2: the man.

in texas anything over 24 years of age no longer has to pass emisions just saftey only. so lights horn wipers that sorta thing.
Hooray for old trucks!

glad you got your truck done tho.

I am in Larimer county, and we don't have any emission laws up here for gas engines. We told the man to :flipoff2: and he went away.

But rumor has it that he is returning with very strick new emission laws in 2010, but by then I will have a Vortec in there anyways.

:flipoff2: the man!

How did he achieve these results? Was it tune up work or a tank full of Heet?

How much did it cost?

I know if was not tune up since I paid to have a major tune up done somewhere else. I also tried heet/CRC guarenteed to pass...and it still failed..(so I will be getting double my money back on that one). He told me that he tries to keep his methods between him and him. Only thing he told me was that he changed my cat. But a cat on its own is not going to bring the numbers down like that. I paid 200 for the cat change.

wow. I will certainly be giving that guy a call when the time comes.

he charge you anything else?
he wants it between him and him... not tryin to bring anyone down but sound like he did what i "might" have done when i was a state inspector... or maybe the sniffer "fell" and wasnt all the way in the tailpipe... who knows.:grinpimp:
all im saying is it may be possible something like that happened....

but really your happy right? thats all that matters. he got paid he is happy your rig is legal your happy everyone wins!

I watched the whole test through the booth they make you sit in while they sit in your truck and attempt to make it fail. The sniffer was in the whole time and instead of the truck taking the usual time to make it through the whole test it went through in what seemed like lightening speed.

He definately replaced the cat...but don't know what else he did. All my hoses from the smog pump where the standard position and the truck didn't even run any different..so what ever he did it was not timing related or smog pump related.

And the truck is legal..(for now). I'm searching as we speak for the de-smog diagram thread b/c that's the next project. Ripping all that needless crap out of there since I won't have to take this test again and I'm never getting rid of the truck.

how do i find this guy?

Being the guy who has probably wasted more money than anyone else on the planet trying to get something smog legal (i.e. Landcruiser fuel injection), and the guy who works with this stuff all day long, let me toss in my 2 cents. California has this little policy (no doubt unprinted) that says if the vehicle is flunking, then only an improvement has to be made. Guess what makes an improvement boys and girls---a new cat. With 1,000% of all FJ60 smog devices already totally defective, this is about the only resource left for you and/or the inspection station to fall back on.

I bet you a million dollars that your "No pass, no pay" guy threw some E85 in there with the gas, threw some gas on top of it to mix in good, and then ran it for a while. The cruiser will run on E85 I've read, won't affect how it runs, and will dramatically decrease the emissions.

My 2 cents...

...The cruiser will run on E85 I've read...

Do you personally know anyone that has done this? E85 is $1 a gallon cheaper in my area than regular 85 octane gas. If it will really run on that stuff and not jack anything up, I would love to run that!!!

Here in denver...it doesn't matter what improvements you make and or how much money you spend. If the numbers don't come into compliance..you are SOL. My numbers went from hundreds over to single digits and zeros after giving this guy a few days with my truck.

You'd be a million dollars short then. Cause I tried E85 in my rig on the first try and it ran horribly and actually made things worse. After I ran through a tank and put regular gas in..my numbers HC's went down..but still about 100+ over the limit.

DT,

There was sort of a thread on this somewhere. I'll see if I can find it for you. Really the only thing bad was that the gaskets deteriorated. My friend up near you in FoCo runs e85 in his heep. He mixes half regular and half e85 in the tank. No problems yet.

I didn't mean fill 'er up with e85. It has too high of an octane rating to run well by itself. If you do half and half, or a bit more e85 than regular, then I've read here on the forum that it can do wonders for emissions.

I am going to say that I've never tried it, but it might be worth it sometime. Now I just have to find an e85 pump.....

Based upon my experience, I do think a cat can bring those numbers down. When I tried to smog mine, I tested everything per the FSM (80% of which failed). After fixing all that and spending hundreds, not to mention my time, my numbers barely budged. So I replaced the cat and my numbers went down to nothing, just like yours.

Not only the gaskets, but I believe E85 will destroy the rubber fuel lines as well. I have no idea how long it would take to do that.

Since I AM the Man - I personally take offense to those comments. :D

Thanks for the warning about the lines and what not.

And what sort of MAN are you? The po po that I am not having to worry about because I drive a cruiser that doesn't like to speed anyways?

Well the man I'm talking about are the legislators who make these BS laws that serve to take money out of the pockets of the lay man and keep money in the pockets of big business. Sorry to offend you tho if you are "The Man". Isn't freedom in our country a great thing.;)

Seriously doubt it was just the cat..giving readings like the sniffer was measuring air. But...maybe you are right. Still the guy did a good job for a couple hundred bucks and did what he advertised....no questions asked and no excuses. People like this should be rewarded and patronized.
