Stock Re-arching (1 Viewer)

Now that PE springs are out for me, I am curious to know if anyone has had experiance re-arching stock springs? Are there an metelurgical issues that make rearching 35 year olds springs a bad idea?

My spring specialist here re arched and added custom leaves to my FJ60, resulting in 2 inches over new stock lift. Importantly, he heat treats the springs after re arch to help them hold arch over the long haul. After about a year , no sag. There are very few "blacksmiths" left that will do it that way. If nobody in your area does it, I recommend saving up and just getting a set of lift springs. Look into OME Dakkar; I have a 40 with OME classics and it rides great.

Doc is right on the money. There was a time when spring shops did a lot of work and knew their schtuff. They, like small appliance repairmen, are getting scarce. The deal is heat treating, and the cost of bringing the old springs up to snuff, done properly, has exceeded the cost of buying new ones. I had saggy stockers and contacted the one remaining "spring shop" in KC and he would not do it without an add-a-leaf....and no guarantee. I just bought some new springs, cheaper than what the spring shop wanted, but I found a deal.

When rebuilding mine had them re-arched only lasted about 1 year before they saged worse than before. dont do it save up and buy new

i sent a set in to get rearched and they said that it was not really worth the trouble. apparently that spring steel is hard to form with out heat and i believe the process is kind of lengthy and costly because they leave them under heat and slowly back it off and hope they stay. you might just consider getting new springs....i have 2 sets of stock springs pm me if you want a set. good luck.

a few friends and i swear by rearched springs, this old guynear my houes in Aus does them, and we abuse them and they don't sag (unless you twist em, ask me how i know)

and on top of that you can get them to custom tune the spring rates, and stock cruiser springs seem to flex better than MOST lift kits i've seen
