Stihl 088 chainsaw oil worm gear spring

Can anybody help me out on this one. I have a Stihl 088 chainsaw and i can't get the clutch off to examine the oil pump worm gear spring. there seems to be a little slop in it, so it won't stay in the groove that's on the clutch drum. will that cause a problem? i started the saw without the bar and chain and the oil came out just like its supposed to. what exactly does that spring do? thanks in advance.

The clutch comes off to the right.
