I installed a Detroit Axle steering rack and the thing is crazy stiff. I have backed off the preload a full turn, but it is still nowhere near athe effortless affair that the stock rack was. Is this rack a POS or am I missing something?

Probably a combination of both. @knewstance installed a Detroit rack and it failed quickly. Did you bleed the system thoroughly? Air can cause the steering to feel heavy.

It is free of air. It has been lock to lock again and again. I tried the preload adjustment, went out a half turn, made no difference. Something is screwed up with this.

Just in case anyone stumbles upon this thread and is considering buying a Detroit Axle "rebuilt" steering rack. I had two bad ones in a row. Absolute crap. Went OEM, couldn't be happier.
