cool thread, as I just picked up a stick welder myself for 150.00.
Its a lincoln ac/dc 220.
Im not quite sure what all it does, but Im itchin to find out!
Gotta get my 220 power run first!
What does the ac/dc do?
Ive been using a lil 110 mig, and is what I learned on, so I know next to nothing about stick welding!

DC stick is fairly easy.

With a ready welder and the AC/DC machine you can weld almost anything ;)

I just fired up my stick welder for the first time!!!
HOLY SH*T, what a diference from the mig!
I was still in the "BURN IN" mode from the lil 110v...I really had to pick up my pace as I was GOUGING the base metal!
The first few passes were just AWFUL!!!!
I did about 20 or so passes trying this and that, using 3/32 electrodes and 1/8 in electrodes, and they got to look pretty good.
The DC+ seemed to function best out of the AC, DC+ and DC-. The AC setting, I tried a few times and didnt mess with it again.
A NEW TOY!!!:bounce: :bounce2:
The 3/32 rod was a BITCH to start an arc on...I remeber that from my high school shop class, and bad memories came back.
Very fun!

what rod(s) were/are you using?
you do diffeent things with different rods.
you pretty much want dc reverse for stick welding, dc straight is a tig thing.

The rod sizes are in the post...Im using 3/32 and 1/8 in.
I tried DC- for a couple of passes, and it seemed to weld easier on the DC+.
How do you tig weld with a stick welder? I didnt think that was possible.

OHHH! I went back and re read the question, and I get it now...
Theyre the fleetweld 180's, 6011's. I read theyre good for most general mild steel welding and out of position welding.
I downloaded the manual, and that is where I got the info from.

Sorry about that!

ditch the farm rods.
you have a dc machine.
7018's in 3/32 and 6010(aka 5P) in 1/8'' are all you need. those two by the way will also run at the same amperage.

tig runs on dc straight.
you don't need high freq for black and ss steels.
a bottle of argon, a tig torch(with a gas shut off) and a lead with the adpter to fit in teh electrode holder is all you need for a tig set up on that machine.

Thanks for that info Brian.
I didnt realize that you could tig weld with that machine!
I went out and screwed around some more last night...
The DC- is really hard for me to control the puddle, and it always seems to penetrate too deep, and I end up under cutting the base metal.
The DC+, the welds are much nicer, and its easier for me to control the puddle.
I donno if this is a result of using the 110v mig where I had to really work to burn in a good weld.
I do have quite a bit to learn regarding what this machine will do.
As for the rods...I just got what they had on the shelf at Home Depot that sounded, about, what I needed.
Its a much more challenging process, FOR SURE!
I picked the mig up and became fairly proficient at it in no time, where this is way more difficult.

ARE YOU FRICKING KIDDING ME!!!!!
DC+ IS DC reverse?!
How in the hell does that make any sense?!
Im so glad that you informed me of that, cuz I was thinking I was doing something WAAAAY wrong!
I feel TONS better about that.

dc+=dc reverse;)
I was wondering if you were gonna point that out ;)

Chicago, if you want a good field mig that you can use in the home as well get a readywelder.. You can use them as a spool gun with your DC stick machine..

stick problem/question.... I welded a few pieces of 1/16" together this weekend. How long do sticks last? I was blazing through them. Maybe another way to look at it, how many sticks does it take to weld about a foot of two flat pieces of 1/16"?

what size rod?

Lots of variables..

1/16" 6013 rod, the two metal pieces were 1/16" x 2" x 1'

I also used some 5/64" 6013, it burned a little slower.

how long are those 1/16 rods? 8-10''s
if the machine isn't set/runing right, you're not going to get very far with them, even if everything is right you're still not going to get very far with them.

how many amps are you feeding them 20-30 if that?

It really is suprising how many rods you can go through in a short period of time.
