Hope this hasnt been asked before but ive had no joy searching.
Ive just installed a pioneer bluetooth head unit in my 94 non aibagged 80 and would love wheel controls.
Anyone know what might be an easy replacement?

I don't think it has been done, not advertised at least. I've got this project on the back burner though. I think it will be relatively easy. I plan on trying a Camry wheel, can't remember but around 2004 is when they went to steering controls. The easiest way to find of it fits the shaft is to go to the junkyard with a steering wheel puller and do your R&D right there in the yard. I'm guessing it will fit, but if not, may still be possible. I put a C6 Corvette wheel in my Camaro, the spline didn't fit so I found an upper shaft from a 2000's Grand Am/Bonneville/something that fit my tilt column and the C6 spline, looks factory!

Cool thanks for the feedback.
I was thinking camery or later model 100 series crusier.
Might have to go have a look at a wreckers

Just in case anyone is still watching. Any luck on that Camry steering wheel with controls? It would save me a bundle. And is there any chance of getting the airbag to work with the equipment already on the (my) 95 80?

I've been pondering this very project for the last few weeks. I was actually thinking about trying to see if an early 100-Series clock-spring and wheel would install on a '97 80-series column. I had wheel controls on my 2004 Hundy and loved them. Assuming you could get the wheel and spring to mount up, you'd need to modify the harness to accept the additional leads. Then comes the consideration of airbag interchangeability. Not sure if the 100 Series airbag has drastically different dynamics that the 80 Series airbag. I wouldn't think so, but it would be irresponsible not to explore the consequences.

I literally just got off the phone with Toyota about that. They did not have any good answers for me since they obviously do not want you to replace the wheel with anything other than the factory designed replacement. But what I did find out is that it is an electrical charge that activates the airbag. I am just learning about this so this might not be new news, but at least the airbag would work as long as the electrical connections that attach to the airbag are compatible. As for the wiring for the radio and the other wheel controls, I am wondering where they go? Are they going through some hollow bolt in the wheel? Do they just twist around the wheel? I have not taken one off yet to take a look.

I work at a VW parts place but havnt been there long,we wreck late model stuff to and from my knowledge the radio wiring runs through the clock spring as well.
If you can get part of the donor car harnes it shouldnt be that hard.
Im going to reaserch hilux/tacoma wheels more as the link earlier in this thread demonstrates that its an easy fit with working horn with an 04 wheel
Keep up the research guys and see what we cant come up with.

I had not thought of that. I would think something like a Tacoma wheel might be a better match. Or a 4Runner. My main interest is the safety and function of the air bag. But if it is possible to run the control wires to my new stereo then I consider that a bonus. I will be looking into it too.

That was excellent info. Thanks. Looks like the only real option is the LS400 wheel though. The biggest issue for me was the newer two stage air bag that would not be compatible with the 80. The good thing about the LS400 is that it gives me at least one more option for a very difficult item to find. I am really trying to keep from spending the money to have mine re-wrapped. Too bad about the controls though. I was looking forward to that. Nice find on the retro fit parts on Ebay though.

Im not sure we had an LS400 here,
Whats it based on?

Sorry! Talking about a Lexus LS400 (and 300 it turns out btw). I just started a thread on just how many useful interchangeable parts there are on the LS400.
