The current wheel on my 70 has horn buttons on two of the steering wheel spokes and there is about an inch of a gap between the wheel and the column. It grates on my nerves so I ordered a 70 wheel from 65swb45 - the master of all things FJ40. My dad is currently restoring the wheel for me during his "free time." It has no rectangular horn buttons on the spokes.

Questions: When did the steering wheels begin to have the little horn buttons on the spokes? What part am I missing between the wheel and the column? What would be the proper color to paint the refinished wheel - semi gloss black?

Any pics of unmodified steering columns of 70s FJ40s would be appreciated.

I think the center horn went away in the 73 model.

7/69-9/72 steering spline count is different. 9/72+ different column and steering wheel.

To make the horn functional ? Is that the contact ring behind the nut ? 6/71
