I recently did Saginaw Power Steering conversion on my 40-series.
I was wondering what Steering Stabilizers do you guys use with the conversion and how do you mount them?
Would OME-SD23, which designed for stock steering on 40, work with Saginaw? It's kind of short and have around 6" of travel (need to measure exact number...)

I don't have a steering stabilizer at all. SOA, 35s... seems ok.

Does it drives steady on the highway?
My steering is so light, that I can turn it on the driveway with one finger. So when I drive over 60km/h and Cruiser rides over a bump on the road the steering wheel moves, it just don't have any resistance. Both my 4Runners have much stiffer steering.

Bump steer? Is your relay rod parallel to the tie rod...or close? No, I don't think you can easily adapt OME steering stabilizer but you can use any one of several that clamp on with U bolts.

FWIW. We have pretty much the same conditions on the '72 FJ40. Put a "CLAMP/U-BOLT" mounted stabilizer on, ... Not one bit of difference!

A common issue with saginaw is that it feels overboosted.

I drove my FJ40 for several years with the saginaw and it never really bothered me. Then I started DDing a 4Runner and now a Tacoma and when I get into the FJ40, the steering feels somewhat scary by comparison.

I've thought about a steering stabilizer to 'slow' it down a bit but its never really been an issue.

If you have sloppy steering, other things can contribue that. How old are you spring bushings? Are your shackles and spring pins tight?

Same here. One finger at any time. It drives great on the highway. I have pretty steep caster, over 5 degrees. All new TREs, steering box and spring bushings.

Edit: 4-turn box from a '70s J2000.

No stabilizer here either.
SOA, Hy steer and 37's. Tracks nice.
What turn ratio box do you have? From what over read, the less the number, the faster the turning is and can make it feel pretty sketch.

Yep, seems the same story.

No wobbling or something, it's just too light vs. 4Runners steering; feels like wheels are in the air.
I wanted to load it a bit.

New springs and bushings, 100km on them.
Newly rebuilt axles, same 100km.
All steering links are new with brand new heims, no play at all.

It's '76 MonteCarlo box with 4-1/4 turn.

I don't think you'll even notice the difference with the stabilizer installed. :meh: It would cut down on vibration if you had wobble from crappy old tires.

Larger pulley and flow control.

I had the same issue with my Saginaw conversion. I am using a stabilizer and using the largest p/s pump pully I could find. It still felt pretty light. Installed a flow control fitting from Speedway motors and slowed the pump from 3gpm to 2gpm. I think it might have helped some but it just takes some getting used to.

Hmm. sounds like my FJ40. 'Cept I have a 3-3/4 turn box out of something or another (I got it on ebay. New in the box $35 shipped to my front door)
I also did the West Texas Offroad pump mod for more pressure. Its literally fingertip steering in the rocks too. Nice for rock crawling. Not so nice on the road.

Like most here, Saginaw, 4" lift, 33 x 12.5 tires and no stabilizer no problems, after I addressed some of the issues mentioned. Drag link, tie rod ends, alignment and caster shims. Drives like a dream with one finger no drift no wobble and no more bump steer.
