steering stabilizer installation (1 Viewer)

HELP! cant seem to get the stock steering stabilizer out, just will not budge. help me please

Use a small propane torch to get the rod hot (but not the not the stabilizer pin/bolt.) This will expand the connecting rod hole away from the stabilizer pin/bolt. Once you get that hot, whack the hell out of the rod tab where the pin/bolt goes through with a BFH. Usually after a couple whacks it will pop right out. To keep the rubber grease boot (and the truck) from catching fire, I tear mine away with pliers and wash the grease away with brake cleaner first.

Sometimes you can whack it cold and it will pop out. Hitting the bolt does not good, you have to hit the area next to where the bolt passes through the relay rod.

I used a "pickle fork", the tool for removing tie rod ends,
and my brother in law's impact wrench;
came right off.

Here is my previous post on this subject. There are lots of ways to remove the stabilizer.

I battled removing my steering stabilizer (pickle fork was wrong size and my gear puller kept slipping off). So I went with Plan C.

1) Used right angle grinder with cutoff wheel and cut the damper at the mounting pin.
2) Used a vice to press the pin out. It popped right out. Be aware that when the pin pops out the vice will fall, so plan accordingly.

You require a sledge hammer and not your average carpenters tool.

2-5 lbs will knock this beast off in seconds.

A small tie rod end puller will push it right out.

Seems like a C-clamp would be a little less un-wieldy than a 20# bench vise.

I pickle forked it out- but the vise method seems to be the best idea yet. I don't know if a C-clamp would generate enough force to get the thing off. I used a vise to remove the plate from the old stabilizer on the passenger side of the car- the little triangular plate- since I couldn't get the stabilizer off with the plate attached to the cruiser. Lost a bit of skin in the process as well...

A small tie rod end puller will push it right out.

x2, I've never gotten those pickle forks to work.

OTC ball joint/tie rod end remover No. 7315A will pop it out. Easier to use than a grinder and vise and is less likely to damage a rod end than a pickle fork if you're planning on reusing the rod end.
