I searched online for someone having the same problem as me and this gent is talking about my problem. I just replaced the U joint at the firewall but I'm still getting the weird clicking. Anyone have any insights or mods they've done?

I believe the steering is the telescopic type. It collapses as a radio antenna in case of a serious front end collision. With time, there can be a play and I think that is what you are looking at.

That's my video, lol...

Pretty sure the permanent fix is a new shaft assembly but I'm not 100% convinced. It's just to much to purchase and then the R&R of the column takes time I'm not prepared to invest right now.

I did try a quick trick with some zip ties before we went on vacation and it's still holding with no noise yet.

It's ghetto as can be but works for now.

You can hear the difference in the video, just a little pressure down and the noise stops.

YMMV

@Greenbean - Any updates on this? Did you ever pinpoint exactly to what the problem was?

Actually no,
Been running it like this for years now...

However check this out.... I believe this guy found it and did the repair with a new lower shaft I believe.

It's a few pictures down where he goes into detail about it....
