Status of Monticello Box? (1 Viewer)

I'm temporarily calling NM home (Alamogordo) and looking for interesting places to check out. I saw an article on the Monticello ghost town / box canyon area which looks absolutely stunning - but quickly saw lots of google returns indicating it was being/had been closed to the public.

I know there were several petitions to reopen the area, and some talk of it maybe being accessible via an alternate route (through Winston?). Just curious if there is a current update on what's available or where to go?

I believe you can still access the canyon from the south through Monticello but the exit 15 miles up stream has been gated and locked.
