Almost every time I COLD start my 80 I get a loud GROWL right at the moment the engine turns over. It's not from the starter. It's something inside the engine compartment. It only growls for the split-second it starts, then it's gone. If I drive for a minute and restart...no growl. It won't growl again until it's COLD. Thoughts?

Recent work: A/C compressor idler replaced (ahhhh, quiet motor again). Noise began a week after having this replaced (???).

Maybe its mad at you for buying a 100.

cold start rattle? if so try the smaller Toyota filters and see if it goes away/gets shorter

cold start rattle is from slack in the timing chain until the chain tensioner fills with oil

Reffug: You should be happy to know.......I've decided to take a step backwards with the 100 as to trail difficulty. I'll also take a step forward to use the 80 far more often. After all, that's why we bought it. This is why I 'd like to get these 2 issues nipped in the bud.

This should lessen or eliminate the infamous phrase: "100 goes where the 80 can". I'll concede.......the 80 can go where the 100 can't. ;)

Power steering pump.

Ahhh, just put in a new pump and gasket. Not sure if the noise started before or after that. Eeeoowwwww I'll have to think on that. If the noise started AFTER or WHEN we put in the pump, then what could have been done wrong Dan?

But I'm still gonna give you s***.

My 80 does about the same thing you are talking about. When I first crank it up it makes a funny GRRR noise until it warms up. Sounds like the EGR or something. Got louder when I put the snorkel on.

I would agree if the sound was not split-second. The pulse-air reed sound in 93-94 lasts much longer, up to a minute or so in cold weather and it is more of a burbbling sound because of the exhaust pulses.

either the Pair vlave opening or the fan cluctch that is ingaged. Take off the fan belts before you start it next time. Or have some one else start it with the hood up with you standing in front. You might be able to find the sound then.this sound is normal if it is the one I am thinking of. usually the pair valve on the 93-94 model, some models the fan clutch will engage at start up to make a growel also. later robbie

Just figured the timeline Dan. This noise we're speaking of began about a week after the A/C idler was replaced. The power steering pump was replaced over a month later so I don't thing that's it. J

Dang thing. Wish it did it every start. I only get one try per day. I'll go listen now. J

Is it a zipping sound?

sounds are always fun to try and figure out. See not all the information was given at the begining. I might be the A/c idler that is the problem, unhook the belt and start the engine and see if the sound is gone. It may be the belt is not tensioned properly. later robbie

Figures. I just started it. No growl. CRUD!

Dan: From the inside of the truck it's a startling and very quick ERRRRRR sound. Or a GRRRRR sound.

Does the pitch change with RPM?

Robbie's belt suggestion is a good one. Typically the PS pump buzz happens when the engine is quite cold.

Do you have the High idle problem?

I also had a sort of growl for a split second at around 1200 -1400 rpm at startup.

Once I did the 2 oil ring IAC mod, the startup idle never has been above 1000 rpm again so no growl, so mabe the root case isn't fixed bit at least it's masked.

No time to figure that. The loud sound is a half second long then the motor purrrs.

I'll try different starting motifs and see what I come up with. I'm gonna try starting with the A/C button off. Since this began a week after having that idler replacedI'm suspect of that. I'll then try belts, etc. It is a startling noise that the truck never made before.
