hiya...

i'm expecting delivery of an '81 hj47 this weekend but have never even been inside a diesel landcruiser...

what's the recommended starting procedure? i read something in one of the posts here about waiting for a couple of relays to click? is there a "2H for Dummies" equivalent somewhere?

Thanks!

Steve

Generally there is a "Glow" light on the dash. You wait for that to go out and then fire it up.
I find it starts faster when you wait a little longer.

Some have a "Glow" indicator on the dash that slowly comes on. That is one that you time, say 10-20 seconds depending on the outdoor temperature, before cranking the engine over.

Your HJ47 has the second system that cruiser_guy mentioned. There is a little glow indicator to the right of the steering column that will start to glow as you energize the system.

it starts to glow when it's ready or the glowing indicates that it's getting ready? is it a guess as to when to crank it?

thanks

I'll try to explain in more detail:
system 1: you turn the key to ON, then the glow light comes on. it is either on a timer, or tied into the water temperature, and then preheats according to the temperature. when the light clicks off, you are ready to crank.

system 2: you turn the key to on, and nothing happens. then you turn the key a bit further, which energizes the glow system, and the light comes on. The light is on a timer, and will go off after 14 seconds or so, but usually it is enough to glow for 7 to 10 seconds. then you turn the key further, and the engine cranks over.

probably you have system 2.

Actually, I have a 1981 HJ47. What I have to do to start it is turn the key BACKWARDS and hold it until the glow plug indicator comes on (15-20 sec) then hit the button on the remote key chain to engage the starter solenoid THEN turn the key to start it.

Not sure if yours has the kill switch on the remote or not. Kindof a PITA if you ask me. Especially if you are in a hurry.
Good news is....you won't have to worry about anyone stealing the truck!

Where did you get the truck? I'm sure the PO could explain it to you.

Its certainly nothing complicated but you may want to take some jumper leads if its been sitting around.
If its an aussie model it will be 12V and can be jumped from a car as normal.

It should be a timer on the 47 .

The later models have a system integrated with the coolant temp which adjusts the amount of glow you get to save the battery

Hey, Steve,

I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago.

I just put in the key, and turn it counter-clockwise to the glow position and count "1-mississippi, 2-mississippi... 12-mississippi." I then turn the key forward and she starts right up.

After you have been running the 2H during the day, you shouldn't have to use the glow position unless it has been sitting for a couple hours or more.

Congratulations on your HJ47!

I think this is the system i have... the transport guys were having trouble starting it and (thanks to this forum) i was able to tell them to turn the key backwards for a 10-count, then start it... it worked fine...

but...

i don't see a glow plug light, but there is a green translucent knob with some kind of symbol on it to the left of the instrument panel--it came off when i was messing around with all the knobs--is that the glow plug light? if not, then what is?

also, there's a lamp next to the hand throttle that says "filter." what's the story there?

thanks to all for the help--i'm excited to have my new old troopie

It could mean the fuel filter has water in it or the airfilter is clogged.
It will be whichever has a wire to it.
Im guessing it will be a fuel filter as I dont think cruisers got the clogged air filter light until the 60/70 series in 84

Fuel filter/water separator under the right side. If the light is on while driving, empty the water out.

Filter Light

If your filter light goes on and you have drained the tank of water and it stays on it could be the alternator, most times it is the the brushes wearing out.
