I replaced the original, slow cranking starters on my 78 and one 77 with gear reductions. Wow , they spin faster and starter easier. Now the originals are emergency backups (not needed).

Yeah I replaced my started with a gear reduction. It is crazy, I had a bad starter for so long ,and took it's toll on the battery.

One of the best things I did for my fj40 starts so much better/faster.

I waited for years for my original starter to fail so I could justify a new GR starter. It just wouldn't die so I changed it anyway. My main reason was the lower amperage draw. My thinking was, some day on the trail with a low battery, a GR starter just might make the difference whether it starts or not.

Differences explained "HERE"

Anyone have the part number for the OEM GR starter handy?
