Agree, working up under the dash gets more difficult the older and stiffer we get. I hit up the Aleve before doing any work like that; a cheapo seat cushion
placed on the sill plate area helps protect your ribs and spine while laying down in that area IME.

In the link to the switch you rebuilt, you show a photo of a brand new switch ( showed below) but that switch has a metal box wired to it in the lower part of the photo, My new switch (For a 94 land cruiser) came without that metal box, so what does that metal box do in the 96 and 97 land cruisers?

The box is attached to the underside of the upper steering (ignition) bracket where the lock cylinder is located. There's a moveable pin on the other side (see photo below) that (IIRC) protrudes into the barrel of the bracket which is then pressed in when the ignition cylinder is rotated by the key. I assumed it was part of the ignition interlock system but I've started and driven that 96 FZJ80 without the metal box attached to the upper steering (ignition) bracket ie: just dangling as in the photo below. But then again the console and shifter were apart also so no brake interlock either.

One of the electronics gurus ( @jonheld ) may be able to post up the differences in the wiring diagrams (early compared to later models) and tell us what it's exact function is.

One finial update, since i installed my new ignition switch i haven't had any issues with my truck not starting,

But since i do 4 wheel in some very remote areas, sometimes by myself, i though it would be good idea if i also installed a starter relay just to make sure i don't get stuck out in the desert,

I ended up installing a Painless hot shot starter relay kit P/N 30202

All in all the install of the relay kit was way easier to install then it was climbing under my dash to install a new ignition switch by a long shot,

Didn’t do this myself, for all the reasons stated above - age, shoulders too wide, hands too big, fingers not nimble enough, eyesight not quite sufficient, back issues in minutes even with the driver’s seat gone…🙂
We brought the truck to @richardlillard1 and @twalker9480 in Mesa, AZ.
And I swear Travis has a few extra joints in his arms and hands.
Travis kicks ass.
 
i've got something similar going on. a couple times in the past year, i've turned the key and nothing has happened. my muscle memory tells my hand to keep cycling the ignition and it usually starts right up after 2-3 attempts. only AFTER do i realize i should have paid closer attention to the symptoms.

of course last weekend i took my wifes vehicle on an overnight trip, leaving her w/ the cruiser to drive locally. 20 miles into my trip she calls to tell me the truck won't start. she went back out a couple hours later and it started right up.

bought a new ignition switch recently to swap in next time i have the dash apart to wire in a new security system. just haven't found the time in 100+ heat. most likely i'll wire in a relay like you did, b/c why not.
