is this hooked up correct? the bottom wire goes to nothing and nothing else is hooked up....new plugs and I cannot get it to start. would this be the possible culprit?

sorry. I phrased my question wrong. the bottom wire of the top 2 connections goes to nowhere.

the bottom wire on my junk grounds the starter.

the bottom wire on my starter has a hoop and it is suppose to be bolted right to the frame...

The black wire with the white stripe goes to the small (+) terminal on the solenoid. The other small one must be a ground. Try jumping with a 10-gauge wire from the starter cable to the + terminal on the solenoid - starter should run (hold the wire on the solenoid terminal & jam the other end on the battery cable terminal - it's gonna spark!).

If the ignition's on, the engine should start. Make sure it's not in gear though.
