Hello all,

I'm new to the FJ80's so I'm not certain of "typical" behavior quite yet, but I am a relatively experienced wrench turner... When I start my 1996, the car turns over and starts within 2-3 seconds or so, but once the starter disengages it sounds like it is still energized for about 1 second after the solenoid disengages. It could just be the gear slowing down, but I've never heard this on a car I've owned before. Thanks in advance.

That is a typical sign of worn out contacts in the starter solenoid that are sticking. You need to address the problem ASAP before the contacts stick for a longer time causing a fire. The contacts and plunger can easily be replaced for a relatively cheap cost. Search "starter contacts" for more information.

Thanks for the reply @ppc, are you suggesting that the solenoid isn't retracting? I ask because it doesn't seem to continue spinning the engine, it seems to be disengaging, but it "whizzes" like @DARKNESS mentioned in his 2.2Kw starter rebuild thread...

If you can, post up a link to a video file with the sound you're hearing.
