I continued my week of maint. to my babies. The :princess: had bad starter contacts. So the only option is to give Dan a call to feed the dogs a snack. The parts came quickly as usual. i followed the instructions on the write up in FAQ. And now she starts up like a charm. It did take me a lot longer than I would have liked due to the top bolt holding the starter on. I used about a 1/4 can of PB and finally was able to get it loose (sure was wishing for some power tools!). For anyone who has starter issues this is a very inexpensive way to start the recovery. Even my 1/2  brain can follow the directions on this site. Thanks again to all who lead the way for me.

I thought it was a real knuckle buster when I did mine.
Had to get some extensions I always wanted.

Smitty,

You are an animal! I might have to do mine now while I have the head off this weekend. You are making me feel like a slacker. :flipoff2:

Good job-Like the PHH it's an inevitable right of passage if you own an 80 series. Those poor mofos with 100's have to take the intake apart to do thiers. As tough as the top bolt is. I can only imagine the pain with the 100 series. Even the FJ60 shares this starter design and I am dreading the "click" that I know is out there. Fortunately, Dan sent me the parts a year ago and they are in the glove box waiting for that day.

Smitty,

Welcome to your first right of passage.

Let me know when you want to tackle the birfs!

You wear the gloves, I'll bring tools.

The birfs will need to be done in the next 12 months. I am working up to those (couple of PHH's, couple of radiator flushes, starter contacts, oil changes, front brake pads, ARB installation, those Hanna sliders when we get them, maybe even diff. oil changes, rear brake pads, then maybe I will be ready for the birfs). The biggest problem I see with the birfs is the fact that I live in an apartment and have no space (I am hoping I can join a birf party somewhere and provide the tools for step six ;) and also some food as trade). One day I will maybe even be ready to install a lift.

"while I have the head off" scares me to death. I can only hope to one day be able to use that sentence and also have the confidence that the engine will ever run again after I put the head back on. btw--sorry to hear about the gasket:frown: .

At least when I am done almost all the PM I have been wanting to do will at last be done. I just wish it had blown a week ago before I put fresh Mobil 1 in it. Perhaps in 12 months or so we can do our Birfs together. I will probably be burned on working on it for awhile... Who am I kidding?:D

Congrats on diving in a learing your rigs. Strong work.

Smitty,

Almost forgot. What did you decide to do about your emblems?

I think that I am still going to do it tom. I have a small dremel set that I think will enable me to rough up all the nook and crannies really good. I have painted golf clubs for a while and think that I understand the painting smooth surfaces procces. If it turns out that I have to touch it up every year or so, I don't really mind. I think it will still look better than the worn away gold trim on it now. Plus if the grill does not turn out perfect it is ok.....it is hiding behing that brand new ARB deluxe bull anyways;)

Nice! Sounds like you have it under control. I would like mine black too as I don't like chrome and especially not gold. It hurts my eyes when the sun flashes off of it. :crybaby: That is part of the reason I went with black rims. That and I am lazy and don't like to clean and polish. Too many years trying to keep motorcycles clean and shiny. I look forward to seeing how they turn out.

I like black rims also....one day I will have them....one day....kind of down on the priority list....right there behind lift, rear bumper, roof rack, winch, cdl, 7pin, cb, HEAD GASKET, etc. I know that you will get a chance to see the result....hopfully sooner than later

Smit

I am sure that I will. You are off to a good start Smit.
