Im confused on how get rid if the start-up rattle. I've read numerous posts about the oil filter being replaced by smaller ones... Why does it make that noise and is it safe??

I've had the rattling also but it isnt as bad. I just want to confirm what is this businees about startup rattle

All the startup rattle posts I've seen are in reference to the 1FZFE motor, not the 3FE. No timing chain on the 3FE.

I had a minor start-up rattle on my 91', I was missing my heat shield bolt on the front catalytic converter under the drivers side door. Good luck!

IC, I thought the 3FE had a chain. Also It could be a rattling heat shield. Thanks Guys

92FJ,

The 3FE has gears. It's not OHC.

See the posts under https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=27155 . My guess is, it's the t-chain. I've had toyota mechanics tell me the only time they've seen t-chains completely fail is when the tensioner fails, usually due to the oil gumming up (not changing it enough). One case was when a guy replaced the t-chain and used black rtv to seal up the oil pan. Some rtv broke loose and gummed up the tensioner, causing the chain to fail in 30K mi. Since the chain is stretched from age/wear, it will rattle until the tensioner picks up the slack, which is when oil pressure builds sufficiently. That's the only connection I can make w/ oil filter size...maybe more oil stays in a certain filter, so the oil pressure builds up quicker?
