Is it normal for the 1FZ 4,5 to rev momentarily when started from cold, dont even have to touch the pedal, just turn the key and it revs upto about 3000 then back down to 1200 till it gets warm and gradually drops to 800 I dont really like the idea of an engine from cold revving to 3000, even if it is for a very short period, no wonder they rattle for the first 2 seconds, is it possible to lower this speed? on cold start up

No, 3k is higher than normal. You should search. This one has beed discussed mucho.

There's a post floating from around 1 month ago about the IAC and 2 oil ring solution.

That should fix your problem or at least one solution to fix your problem.

Startup for me on the 93 is 1600, then after a min slowly drops down, to eventually at 600rpm after 3-4 minutes.....doing theTB cleaning, plugs, wires, and Redline Total Fuel System Cleaner really helped...before idle was 2000rpm at cold start up...

My start up (cold outside) is generally around 1800rpms.

After I let it idle for about 10 minutes, it get back down to ~600 rpms, not having driven it or put it in any gear beyond 'park.'

I have noticed that the start-up revs. have gotten a bit higher and the warm-up time has gotten progressively longer as the temperatures have gotten colder and colder in my neck of the woods (Northeast Ohio). I generally let it warm up about 15 minutes before I even engage it and drive away (I have remote start, so this whole operation occurs in the background for me).

Though, when I was starting up in AUgust (80+ degrees instead of 20 degrees), I did notice that the engine rev. was about 1500 rpms and it quickly got to 600 rpms with minimal warm-up time/idle time.

I should also note that during the summer I run Mobil 1 10w30 and in the winter 5w30. This will influence both the rev. and the warm-up time, IIRC, from other posts.

I have used the Redline and I still like the Seafoam with every gas up in the tank and with every oil change in the crank case.

Have yet to do the TB cleaning.

Just my .02...hope it helps any.

Best.

Did anyone read my post, it will fix your high startup idle?

revs

Sorry I was wrong lads, I started the L/C up this morning (cold) and without touching the throttle, it revs to 1,750 and then drops to 1,200 straight away, when it starts to warm up, it then gradually drops to 800 or there abouts, does the ecu keep the revs up on warm up? seems to keep above 2000 when running cold, like it is not selecting a gear that will drop the revvs till its warmed up to running temp.

Exactly *where* is this "oil ring" post of yours and why would anyone expect that doing something with their oil rings will fix a high idle problem?

Snow -

The RPM levels you now mention sounds more like what many of us experience. This topic has been covered many many times but here's some info.

Many folks believe it can be avoided through the use of a smaller oil filter, synthetic oil, cleaning the throttle body or some combination there of. Here's two links - one from a previous discussion and the other detailing a modification that will greatly reduce the high start up idle. Again, try the forum search feature because there's a ton of great info out there.

And the mod instructions.....

Jason,
Thanks for reposting the proper link and giving credit for the fix to 80sCool.

Norm has posted a lot of ingenious fixes to problems we're just beginning to see on this side of the pond. Not to mention his contributions to birfield service...
