Just picked this trailer up and planning of modifying it to the typical roof-top tent style.

The trailer is in good shape but does have minor rust on it. I'm planning on having a steel lid fabricated on it and possibly wider/longer fenders. I want to have it sandblasted to get rid of all the rust thats on it.

I'm a complete newb when it comes to metal work ect. is it a good idea to sandblast it now and then get a lid put on it, or is it better to do all my add-ons then sandblast and paint at the end?

I have the original camp tarp that came with the trailer. I'll sell it if someone wants it. I don't want to ship it, I'm in Vancouver BC.

I'll update as the build progresses.

Nice trailer. Just needs a little love.

I went ahead sandblasted and painted first. Then everything that goes on is corrosion proofed. Wide fenders make for a great looking trailer. I had those done, then sandblasted, painted and installed when doing the trailer.

Don't know if you know about the potential for CARC being the paint on the trailer. Some didn't get it, some did. I can't tell the difference, but you don't want to breathe sandblasted bits of anything anyway. I hired it out and mentioned the possibility to the contractor. he seemed unconcerned -- but he was an old guy:p

Hi Toy, any tips on where you found it? im in south eatern BC and have been looking... fruitlessly!

Cheers peter

You could talk to Cruisin' Off Road Jason... he built me a really nice lid and wider/longer fenders (that I've yet to install).

He also does a sweet tailgate mod if you didn't want to do it yourself. (you can just make out the fenders in the bed)

I actually had been talking with him about doing a lid and stuff for mine. Hopefully get it to him in a month or two. I just took it to a shop that is sandblasting and priming it for a great price. I choose just to do the outside and tub instead of ripping it all apart and doing the underneath. From what I can see the underneath already has a thick coating of paint on it. I think I will just wire brush and paint any rust on the axel and shackles myself.

Nice trailer. Mind telling where you're getting the blasting/priming done? I think I want that done on mine because it has similar spots on the outside, and a bit more rust inside the bed.

I took it to a couple places and got quotes in the $800 plus range for blasting and primer. I called up quik-shot truck body refinishers in Langley www.quikshotbc.com, and Rick there said he had done one before and quoted around $300-500 sanded and with an industrial primer they use on dumptrucks, depending on how easy the CARC paint comes off. He's busy so I left it with them to do when they get a chance between dump trucks.

While the trailer is getting sandblasted, I thought I'd keep working on the small stuff. I took apart the triangle reflector, sanded the rust, worked out the bends in the metal and then painted with tremclad. Look as-new as I could get them, I know they are irreplaceable.

Next up is to refinish the taillight lenses and repaint them.

Wow ! you still have the " night drive" lights I wear glasses today because of those things, Squinting in the middle of the night HOPING that I wouldnt run in to the ILTis/ trailer in front of me, a long time ago.

Polished the taillight lenses and painted them, came out well. Not decided on a final colour for the trailer, but hopefully black taillights work.

Got the trailer back from the sandblaster today. They did a really good job, got under the fenders and even the axel and spots under the trailer that I wasn't expecting, they even did the wheels! I left the bottom of the trailer the way it was because there is a thick rust-free coating already on there, why fix something if it's working well right? They primed it with a marine heavy duty epoxy, thats why its black. Total cost with Tax (%12) was $420, which I think is a great deal.

Next step is to get it to Jason @ cruisinoffroad to do the lid and maybe an extension on the fenders forward so I can mount jerry cans there. I also ordered a ARB Pilbara tent from IPOR.

The tires are in good shape but I think I will replace them with 235/85-16, just for piece of mind on longer trips.

So I've currently got the trailer flipped over and there is some peeling paint with rust underneath on the frame. I have wire wheel brushed it and am planning on painting it with Tremclad (rustoleum), is this a good plan or should I be using something like POR-15? There is more good paint then rust and I heard POR-15 does't take to well to existing paint (CARC). I have already painted the Axel and hubs with flat black Tremclad. The bottom of the tub seems like its in good shape with a thick rubber coating.

The trailer will be stored in a heated garage when not in use if this makes a difference.

I cut out all the seam sealer spots that were bad and re-sealed everything. then I flipped the trailer upside down and ground down the rusty areas and painted those areas. I could have probably done a better job underneath but it was in pretty good shape with a thick rubber coating and I didn't see the point of fixing something that isn't broken. I just used tremclad on the areas I wire brushed and a thick coating on the axel and springs, hopefully this holds up ok.
I also replaced the bearings and all the bushings, the parking brake is a little sticky but it looks like it would be a pain to replace so hopefully it will be alright.

I then took the trailer to Jason at Cruisin offroad and had him make me a lid for my new ARB Pilbara tent and also jerry can holders and extended fenders. He also made a slick propane holder on the front and a front support to stabilize the trailer. Here are some photos that Jason took.

It looks really good!

Now it just needs sandblasting on the raw steel and primer then some paint (Haven't figured out what colour yet).

so bad ass, man. I would LOVE to tow one of these behind my 4Runner... How much did the lid cost you?

Slapped some paint on her! Nearly done, just have to paint over the primer on the wheels and mount the tent.

Here's what I picked up to stabilize the rear of the trailer when camping.
