Stalls when warm - low idle - carb? (1 Viewer)

Truck is actually a 45 but has a stock 2F from an 85 60. I know nothing about carbs, but figure the carb must be the culprit. Normally when warmed up the truck runs perfect and it usually idels around 750 RPM. Last night on my way out, then all day today, every time the truck would get warm and I'd check the idle it would idle low then stall. By low I mean it would idle around 550-600 RPM then stall.

I tried adjusting the carb a bit - turned the adjustment screw 1/2 rotation clockwise. Didn't want to go further as up to now it's been 100% perfect.

Also not sure but believe while it's a Toyota carb it may possibly be a non-usa version.

Besides taking the bfh to the carb (no, I wouldn't really do that), any thoughts?

try viagra, that will get your idle up


If all was well then it all goes to hell it is either a divorce or a vac leak. You dont have that many hoses jsut follow all of them. Check tightness of carb mounting bolts, disconnect then plug the vac to the booster...if it stops doing it you have a booster leak.

Which screw did you turn?

Did it make any difference?

Sounds to me like it's running out of fuel, so either a vac leak, or a piece of poo floating around in the bowl that gets sucked up against the jet sometimes.

Junk and a post that mentions poo. So glad to be back! Mr Poo. I just have this vision of Junk trying to crap into his carb, good thing it is a 2 barrell. To hell with a BFH, I am just going to poo into it!

The screw I adjusted is the one circled in red. On the firewall side at the bottom. I turned it back to where it was since the adjustment didn't do much. Figured anything more than 1/2 turn means I got some other issue.

If there is poo in the bowl, how best to clean it out? I guess they don't make carb plungers

Mr. Poo.
That there be the fast idle screw to adj the choke idle speed. Does nothing to base idle with choke off. The screw you want is by the base on the same side. Go back to that spring then go in towards the base of the carb and you will find it, idle adj screw. (Wait till Jim actually explains the above corretly)

That might be NON USA. I have had some NON USA poos but only after mexican food

Yes, it is a carb for RHD non-smog applications.

Musta been poo. Adjusting that screw didn't do anything FJ40Jim. I ended up turning it back to where it was. Put up with it running poorly for 2 days then today on the way home the poo must have shifted because now it runs as well as it always did.

Should I think about taking it apart to clean out the poo? If so, is that tough to do?

You can do a quick flush on the vehicle.

remove air cleaner lid.
remove fuel line & inlet fitting.
remove 14mm bowl drain plugs.
hose gumout carb spray into the bowl vent tubes, letting it run out the drains.
hose carb spray into the fuel inlet hole.

Keep spraying in both of the vent tubes and the inlet, let it drain, maybe chase w/ a little compressed air.

reassemble, see if that washed the loose debris out of the bottom of the bowl.

The poo might be caught in a diverticuli; a colonoscopy is a good diagnostic tool in situations like this. This time the colonoscopy will be used for diagnostic purposes; not pleasure.
