My 83 BJ is stalling a bunch when shifting from 1 to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd usually going up hills, it just started, i'm a bit worried. Any ideas?

sounds like a fuel problem, i would change the fuel filter and drain the sedimenter. look for any fuel leakage around injection lines and pump. maybe run some injector cleaner through.(cause these things are cheaper and easier.)

How many km's on your motor?

Anyone know if you can use seafoam on a diesel?

where is the sedimenter?

386k on the motor

The sedimenter is on the frame under the pass. side

So its the fuel lift pump, burned out, not sending any fuel to the injection pump, anyone know what the part number is?
i'll have to order it direct form toyota unless i can find one somewhere else.

There is no "fuel lift pump" that can "burn out", ie: no electrical pump on the truck ANYWHERE! If the priming pump is not working it will need a seal kit which your local diesel guy should be able to get.

cruiser guy.... more info? The guys I took it to in portland just fixed another 3B with the same problem.

Should there be draw on the fuel line without having it hooked up to the injection pump? When we pulled the line off, there was no pressure.

Is the cylinder by the rear pass. wheel well the sedimenter then? It has a electrical cord going to it and fuel lines to and from heading to the injection pump. How do i go about draining that then? Is it even a problem?

That is the sedimenter. It has a float in it, which will light the filter light on the dash if water is present, lifts the float and completes the circut. There should be a 10mm bolt head on the bottom. Have a containor, turn it out and drain.

No, no draw. Hook up a clear line in the engine bay, between the fuel line as it comes up the firewall from the rear of the truck, to the intake side of the fuel pump (it is the primer pump handle you see bolted onto the side of the injection pump). If there are bubbles in this line when the truck is running, chances are you have an air leak in the fuel supply line between the tank pickup, and the clear line. If your BJ60 has never had the tank dropped and checked, and there are bubbles in the clear line...my vote would be the pickup tube at the tank has corroded and is allowing air in.

As an aside, the fuel pump is driven off a cam from the injection pump. All mechanical, and all very nice.

the filter light definitely is not on, i'll drain it anyway i guess. I've cleared air from the lines before, when doing the fuel filter changes, no bubbles this time, i'll do it in the morning just to see.

its amazing what you will believe being young and helpless eh? boy am I a newbie!

Does it stumble at all when idling, if you replicate being on a slope and jack the throttle up? If so, release the fuel primer when that happens, and if pumping it brings the idle back and stops the stumbling...then look to fuel/air...then go down the line checking all rubber/fittings/metal lines.

Also, you have a new fuel filter on it like cody mentioned...right?

it hasn't yet, sometimes it will just die no stumble, just dead. I'll try that in the morning too.

just got a new filter today, haven't put it on yet, as soon as I wake up.

When you try draining the sedimenter you will likely find nothing coming out. That's a sign that the drain is plugged with corrosion and debris. Shove a piece of wire up there to clear it out.

thanks everyone and MUD for having a database of previous threads, did some research, it was the EDIC shutting it down, low oil, not low enough to trip the oil light, filled her up, changed the fuel filter and cleared the lines, purrin like a big brown kitten now!

Ahhh, good. I had wondered, then failed to put it down while focusing on fuel.

Good reminder to always check the basics 1st.
