I built a SST today.
I needed to get the pilot bearing out of the 60 and didn't have a puller. I thought I'd try a method I read about on Mud.

The ID of the bearing is 15mm, so I went over to my sons house and turned down a piece of hard wood dowel about 6" long to 14.8mm. I packed the pilot bearing hole with grease then drove the dowel in. The first time the dowel went in but no grease came out so I packed in some more grease and tried again, the bearing came about half way out. One more time packing the grease in and whacking the dowel in and the bearing was free. It was pretty cool.

The icing on the cake is I had priced a pilot bearing puller set at Harbor Frieght earlier today, $45.

nicely done. its always good to save money :)

Never would have thought to use a wood dowel. I've done it that way before, but I can't remember what I used, I think it was just a piece of all thread with some tape on the end.

Next thing you know, you will have all the hard work done and be driving it again.

Still 1/2" from being done. IH8 installing transmissions.

I know from past experience that it will just slide in when I get it right, today I just stopped when I was getting frustrated. Better to walk away than to screw something up. Besides it was to nice a day to spend under my truck in the garage.

I have pretty good luck with installing a couple short bolts with their heads cut off and slotted for a screwdriver, if there is room to get them out.

Jack it up so it's tilted too far down in the back and a little low, then go forward. Leave the trans in gear if you can, direct ratio is best, like 4th gear. Then when you get it close, fine tune the jack until you hit the pilot bushing. Loosen the chain on the jack a little then wiggle the trans back and forth, up and down while pushing forward.

When it's right, it pops right in there. Provided you didn't ding the bushing or drive the bearing in crooked. Not that I know anything about fighting one for 1/2 a day, then finding out I screwed up the install and start over again...
