-Idles perfect w/o any sputtering
-No work done on the vehicle lately
-Vehicle is desmogged

Symptoms
1st & 2nd gear seem to rev fine w/o any sputtering but 3rd gear @ roughly 2K rpms, it seems like it lacks the oomph to get more power. If it does intermittenly get to 2500rpms and i shift to 4th, the engines sputters like a newbie trying to drive a stick shift for the 1st time

Novice mechanic and i don't know where to check first. There was no 'blowout' or any noise associated with this sudden, random sputter....it just happened out of the blue.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Yea...fuel issue for sure

This is the pump located in the rear cargo area underneath the metal cap with 2 screws, correct?

Thank you

Edit: Sorry about that lame question. I have the Haynes manuals and the FSM. I shouldn't have asked that question. I know where it is.

Nope. That is the location for the fuel sending unit. Your fuel pump should be located on the passenger side of the block below your oil cooler it's a mechanical pump. If it's not there you may have an after market electric pump and could be mounted anywhere but most likely along the passenger side frame by the wheel well. Just follow the fuel line from the carburetor it'll take you to either one.

[Duh me I just read your edit.]

No worries...i edited it pretty quickly after i realized my stupidity.

Anyways, i found my positive connection to the battery was lose and so i tightened it and haven't had the problem since. Could THIS really be the culprit???

I had a bit of corrosion on my old Jeep's positive terminal, killed it for a few days. You'd be surprised what something little like that can do.

Yes. Bad connection equals higher resistance in the circuit equals excessive current equals no complete circuit once loaded up. Causes drop in voltage to your ignition devices/fuel solenoid causes sputtering...:meh:

Thanks for the explaination
