I have been searching with no luck. Has anyone done a write up on removing the transfercase with the manual transmision still on the vehichle? And or a transfercase rebuild? Iam loosing gear oil from the transfercase (no it is not going into tranny), it seems to be leaking at the gasket between the transfercase and rear portion of the transmision adapter plate. It also has a slight leak at the PTO shifting rod which I assume is an O-ring.

So when I pull the transfercase should I just replace the mounting gasket (assuming I could by it by itself)? Or is the smart step to put a full seal and bearing kit in? Or is this a pretty complicated job which I should probably take to a shop? If so what could I expect to pay? I live in Alberta, Canada

Its not a particuarly complex job but you really need a manual there when you reassemble it.
The full seal and bearing kit is a good idea.

Its the same as a 60 series of the same year. There was some downloadable manuals on birfield.com but they have gone ,maybe someone else has a link to some others

I've replaced the bearings in the T-case myself. Fairly straightforward procedure. X-fer is not that complicated. But as Rosco advises, keep a manual handy.
If you are doing just the seals there is no need to re-adjust the baring-preload for the rear output. This by itself is the most 'tricky' part and is done by means of shims.
There are quite some seals in there. You have the 'paper' at the case-split, the outputshaft carrier and the cap at the input from the tranny. Then there are several 'o-rings' on the intermediate shaft and slectorhandles.
And, last but not least the oilrings on the shaft-flanges front and rear and in between tranny and X-fer.
Probably I've forgotten one or two.
You also will need the stake nuts.

OK so I decided I might as well do it all: gaskets, seals and bearings. I ordered the parts this morning and I do have a manual. So now I only need to decide whether to tackle it myself or use a shop? How much should I expect to pay??

All together, a well experienced mechanic should be able to do it in 6-8 hours I think. It took me two days to do the whole shebang, but that was in my driveway in wintertime and no special tools.
I took off the rear of the case and the front part with the lockup system. Left the front case of the transfer on the tranny.

Nights tend to be about as long as days or is that different in Panama:grinpimp::grinpimp::grinpimp:?
Two nights is the same as two days..Oh wait...sleep....ehh at the office.....

No, just pulling your leg...
It shows it can be done in a reasonable time.

Kidding but true .. night come here as late as 19:00 ( there are winter season that come at 18:00 ) and if yoy left the office at 18:00 or so .. you will reach your home at night .. :frown:

Need to cook to eat .. etc .. you only work few hours per night ..

Working at night it's little more complicated, more in apt bulding parking .. but anycase cuold be do much more faster than a week :D well if you don't need my help sure :grinpimp:
