How can I identify a later model (1986-newer) split case xfer from the outside (installed in truck)? :)

They have a thicker idler shaft which can be seen from the outside. 38mm to 34mm.
I think there is some pattern difference in the reinforcing webbing in the case.
The later the model, the more webbing they have.
Any US cruiser after 87 (I think) ) will have the vac operated t/case which uses its own unique front plate.

First-look at the build date one the vin tag. 4/86 and later is the magic cut off.

Second-measure the idler shaft. It's the round shaft that sticks out the back of the t-case and is secured by a metal tab. Here is a picture of what to measure-this is an 87 t-case with 38mm shaft.
