I need to know what the box is actually called that the speedometer cables hook into under the hood. Its on a 76 and was wondering how common it is for them to wear out.
Thanks

It's a "speed marker", it's part of the emissions system...

Question... Im in the beginning stages of beginning of wiring a chevy small block with a painless harness. I had no plans of wiring this speed marker box into the new harness. I assumed the process of the cable to the gauge to run the speedometer was mainly mechanical in nature. Im assuming the gauge will still function correctly if there is no juice to the box, but if Im wrong, someone let me know.

I have also seen replacement cables that run straight from the trans to the gauge, bypassing the box. Do these cables ever really wear out?

Yeah, don't worry about it. Either bypass it or leave it there...
