It was a village there & around 1000 people used to live there. When the government (Ceausescu) decided they're going to use this technique to mine copper in the mines nearby, they pumped the byproduct sludge out of the mines, inside the valley that hosted this village. The sludge level (contains high levels of sulfuric acid) then raises 1m every year since '86 (edit: '77), now flooding the whole valley & the only thing standing out is the top of the church (which was already the highest point of the village, sitting on a small hill). So as the level of the sludge rose, people have to leave their homes, eventually all ~1000 of them. I don't know where and how they were relocated, but knowing the socialist systems and regimes, they probably weren't compensated properly.

Here is an article, written in proper english:)

Tech: I'll check it tomorrow:) But I guess all is well
