I'm not sure how you determine if more than .20 has been removed if there is not a starting head height. I mean no one would ever buy a milled head. Someone should know what this measurement is. I'd also ask the head shop to thoroughly clean and then magnaflux test the head for cracks before doing any work on it. Cracks are often very small and hard to see to the untrained eye.

There's probably some literature from Toyota for all those specs. It's a lot to print in the FSM so things that are not seen as important probably don't get printed to the wider consumers. I wonder how many times Toyota expected engines to be rebuilt. It's possible they imagined they'd be resurfaced only once if at all. Again, I'm no machinist...

So, right now, the rig is at a LC specialist guy. I got them recommended from off of here. I believe the manager owns like 5 LC's. So thats positive. I should hear back by the end of the day. I will update yall then!

Good morning everyone I finally have some updates for you all:

-Bolts on the head gasket were just not torqued down whatso ever. Completely loose (I am guessing previous owner did it himself and was just offloading the vehicle to who ever was dumb enough to buy it lmao)
-Head is getting the full treatment (hydroflux etc etc)
-No visible cracks in the block (yet)
-If I recall correctly, the head was warped and it looks like they didnt even plain it last time. So just a complete trash job at the head rebuild.
-Will find out today if there is room to shave more off. If not, the mechanic said there are some "kits" that can be thrown on, however he mentioned thats not typically what you want to do...(This issue right here seems to be the last remaining worrisome element to this head issue)

So all in all, poor job done by who ever rebuilt the head last which caused the blow this time. However, I have no idea if there is a secondary cause which created the blow with the previous owner. But once they get the head situation all sorted, they will then give the rig a complete and total walk through.

FJ60 2Fs could (and did) burn exhaust valves just two years after it was brand new with less than 40,000 miles on the odometer. (My did).
Burned exhaust valves are largely caused by not keeping them adjusted.
To repair that issue, the head has to be removed.
A warped head is caused by overheating.

No,
The head bolts are re-tightened by just removing the aluminum valve cover and backing off a head bolt 1/4 turn, then tightening it back to spec (94 ft/lbs) using a torque wrench.

The Toyota 2F engine manual shows the sequence how each bolt should be tightened. One bolt at a time.

The reason your head bolts are loose is because the previous owner never checked and retightened them after installing the head.

Insist that your mechanic uses a genuine Toyota head gasket. Do not accept anything else, regardless of his assurances…or you’ll be doing this again several years from now.

Seriously lol. What a thread. I am very eager to hear back from him today (hopefully) Once the head is sorted, I am going to just ask him to check out all sorts of things lol.

But I think that I may tap out once this thing is up and running. I just received a job offer, which will require me to travel about 40 min, m-f, to the job location. So...its been...a learning experience...but a 40 min commute aint really what I want to do in this vehicle.

Also I do not want a project car as my daily. I am considering keeping it as a project, but idk just yet if I want to be paying on 2 cars at the moment.

I also had my 87 fj60 that wouldn't pass emissions and was being triaged by robbing parts from the dead 84. All while I fixed up my old mustang to be sold. As well as a Toyota celica I was selling on behalf of my sister who was out of country. I had to drive my fiance's jeep 40 minutes to work and back every day. She finally had enough and left me with a mess of broken cars. LOL Did I learn? Yes.... don't get engaged and fix land cruisers at the same time. So now I just fix my land cruiser alone. LOL

No we didnt find the bees just yet. The head/gasket should be getting sorted today (remachined etc etc) and after that, I will have the guy take a look at the "bees" issue, as well as the steering.

The vehicle is back in my possession. Drove well home (less than a mile from the shop to my place lol) The recommendation from the shop manager was; There is no reason to sell it. He says its fine. It was just a poor job on the first head build. As I said before, he said it looked like it wasnt even done professionally at all.

He didnt see anything that stood out EXCEPT the front arms NEED to be replaced. The rig has SERIOUS play in the steering. HOWEVER, he suggested, that I simply take it home, and go back to driving it as normal. To ensure the head is holding and nothing is creeping back up.

IF the head is doing fine, I can then cross the bridge on the arms getting done (as well as the bees/psg/any other issues lol)...

But hilariously...there has been no talk about "the bees" issue with him lmao. So all in all this thread is more of a build thread than a "Bees" thread lmao.

Steering is generally sloppy compared to a new vehicle. I've done just about everything I can except replace the steering box with a brand new one and it's still sloppier than I'd like. I have a feeling that even when new they were sloppier than a modern rack and pinion steering set up.

What, exactly are these arms he's referring to? The steering knuckles?

I'm very glad the engine is sorted and seems to be fixed correctly for you. I wish you'd keep the truck! Stick around and learn some things! But I completely understand selling it with your new work commute and what not. It's not the vehicle for everyone and it's not always what you think it's gonna be, that's for sure.

Well yall I figured out a CLUE to the "bees"! Its the 4wd shifter! When I apply pressure to it, the "bees" go away. When I let go, the "bees" return.

I know someone posted in this thread earlier about this issue potentially being related to "the shifter" however, I only checked the primary shifter and not the 4wd shifter lol. So to whoever suggested it may be the shifter, previously, you were right and I am sorry haha.
