Hey folks,

So in an effort to get a title transfered, it has become apparant that title VIN does not match the frame/firewall VIN(s). Though the only difference appears to be additional digits.

Frame VIN = FJ4043513, Title VIN = T66FJ4043513.

My question, where did these additional digits "T66" come from? And will this fail the VIN inspection? most folks I ask say it will "fail" however, they are not exactly in the know on these matters. So I leave it up to you folks, hopefully someone here will be able to give me some insight on these matters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The T66 is probably a prefix added by a DMV, but the safe route is to check with the DMV in the jurisdiction in which you'll be titling/registering the truck. Your DMV is the controlling authority, not everyone's opinion as to what is or is not legal ... HTH

Yeah, I have talked with the folks at the registration/title office over the phone, and they say that the numbers have to match or they will not do a title transfer. This has me worried.

By the way, the title transfer is going from California to Texas, if that matters.

what year is it
Year is 1966. Which is where I think the 66 in T66 is coming from.

Oh and a side note, the guy doing the inspection also noted that the VIN doesn't match, and I have to get a VI-30-A from him saying that VIN is correct Title to Vehicle.

Does anyone else have extra numbers and letters before "FJ40XXXXX" on their title?

A 1965 truck that was sold/titled as a 1966 by Toyota...

T66 was on a round brass tag retained to the edge of the data plate on the passenger side bulkhead...it was put there by Toyota. Someone may have removed it over the years...

Talk with the Texas DMV/Inspection division; I am not aware of anyone out here that works for them.

Unless you are getting information out here specifically concerning pass/fail from someone that works in that area from your State, you can only view information out here as conjecture, and not fact...

Yeah, definitely not there :(

Guess I'll be having an odd talk with the DMV about how part of the VIN is now gone, gonna be fun

My title (In CA) has added stuff in the front as well. Was not a big deal here at all. It has something to do with the length of the vin if I remember correctly. Mine is a 1970. I do not remember off hand what was added to it. Due to the age, I do not have to get it inspected, so no one is checking/comparing the vin(s). I had no problem changing the title to my name.

I have T69 infront of my Vin here in Oregon. Dunno why...caused some problems when I went to insure it. I just gave the INS company the VIN off the title and all is good...for now.

Poser is right. Mine is actually a '65, but was titled as a '66 with the round brass tag that read "T66". I would venture to guess that means Titled 66, not Toyota 66.

My apologies for the resurrection...

Will, did you ever get this straightened out? Let me know if there is anything that California can do to clarify the matter - this was purchased in California about fourteen years ago, sold to me in 2006 (in California), and then on to you.

I do not recall ever seeing the brass tag, so I can't help with that, but we never had title issues in California.

Hey thanks, but I ended going to some hole-in-the-wall inspection place... They didn't even check the VIN, just drove it, then gave me the inspection certificate :meh: And if it ever needs it, I think I'll just end up getting a brass pet name tag engraved T66, and put that on... that should suffice.
